J. D. Mason
That Devil's No
Friend Of Mine

Successful mortician Bishop Fontaine was known as a loving father and caring friend. But most didn't know how manipulative and controlling he was to the people closest to him. When Bishop passes away, the lives of five people are forever changed. Bishop's only child Kristine really misses her father but she also has a sigh of relief because she can finally live her own life. Lamar was like the little brother Bishop never had and acted as an uncle to Kristine. He and his wife Rhonda helped raise Kristine. Now that Kristine is a grown woman and Bishop is dead, Lamar wonders if he can finally act on the romantic feelings he has for her. Lamar's wife Rhonda is devastated by Bishop's death but she's even more suspicious of how Lamar looks at Kristine. She hopes that her worst fears aren't coming true. Cole is a boxer and is a distant cousin to Bishop. Cole saw Bishop as the perfect role model but his supermodel wife Nora saw otherwise. Cole and Nora's marriage becomes troubled due to Nora's dark obsession. Rayne is a local nightclub singer who is now clean and sober thanks to Bishop's help. But now that Bishop is gone, will she hit rock bottom again?

That Devil's No Friend of Mine is an excellent novel by J. D. Mason. Mason expertly shows how one man affected the lives of so many people. Each of the characters are good people from the outside looking in, but they all had deeply rooted flaws once you examined them further. When reading this book, you'll wonder what will be the final outcome of all of the characters. Readers will definitely feel all of the emotional drama as this story unfolds. Mason also did a wonderful job of creating a very realistic ending to each of the character's stories that won't disappoint. Naomi, Kennedy, Mira, and Tyler are four seemingly ordinary women who all are connected to the infamous Black Door adult entertainment club. All of them keep this little known fact a secret but for how long? Naomi is a suburban housewife that can't figure out why her husband won't sleep with her. Mira is a conservative CEO of a cosmetics company whose wild side may ruin her career if revealed. Kennedy is a flight attendant that is tired of the dating game but a sexy frequent flyer in first class may be the answer to her prayers. Tyler finally comes to the realization that her long term relationship isn't as solid as she thought it was. Will the Black Door provide the answers that these women are looking for?

Naughty by Velvet is another sizzling installment to the Black Door series. Velvet once again brought another new crop of interesting characters and new situations. The Black Door club itself was actually in the background of this story rather than in the forefront like the previous novels. There's a lot more attention paid to the character's individual lives and problems than to the inner workings of the club. This gave the story a different twist. There is a lot of drama, deception and even murder in this story that will definitely satisfy readers. Of course no Velvet novel would be complete without plenty of steamy sex. By the end of this book, you get the feeling that you will definitely see these characters again. Although this is a part of a series, you can read this particular installment without reading the other ones first. Naughty is another deliciously addictive novel by Velvet.

She also meets the very handsome basketball coach Curtis Parker. He's everything she wants in a man, but there's one major flaw: he's not saved. As Curtis struggles with his belief in God, Yvonne is gaining more and more strength in God. Will these two be able to take the walk of Faith or will Curtis decide this is not for him?

Even though it was not a fast paced read, Up at the College by Michele Andrea Bowen was still a decent read. It took a little time for me to get into the book and really start gaining interest in the story itself. The characters were kind of bland and the majority of the plot struggled with predictability. However, I do think that the author did a good job with referencing how people deal with faith.

Always A Queen

Always A Queen launches right into Queen speaking with her therapist about the past demons that have molded her into the woman she is today. She begins with the adoration that her father bestowed on her from birth until his disappearance from her life and her mother's murder. Queen is still running from yesterday and searching for answers to calm her nerves and assure her of a happy future. She's in Hawaii waiting to deliver her baby and pondering over what she could have did different in her life with all her affiliates. Then Isiah appears with the sweetest words and actions to allow her to let her guard down and him in her heart again.

Upon their daughter's birth, the new family heads back to St. Louis and Queen happily relinquishes her reign over the Black Mafia to her fiancé and the father of her precious prize, Princess. She assumes the role of mother and struggles to prove that she is indeed a better woman, mother, and wife than her mother Hilary. Queen still has to face her past lovers, familial ties with the Black Mafia, and memories that plague her to the point that they cause her to question all of her decisions. When Isiah's behavior brings doubt into their bloody marriage, Queen runs into the arms of Lamar and Carmen, two men from her past that have always loved her unconditionally.

Always A Queen is the second installation of the tale of Queen, a hustler's daughter. Suspense, murder, lust, infidelity, and adultery are the spices peppered throughout this novel. The relationship between Queen and Lamar was very entertaining and was what actually saved the story for me. This novel is interesting, but lacks the natural ingredient found in exceptional reads or storylines that motivate sequels or continuations. I still commend Ms. White for her sophomore joint.

Illusions by Wanda B. Campbell is one of the best books I have read in a longtime. This book pulls on every emotion you could ever imagine. You laugh, you cry, and you scream like you would do if you were watching a very intense movie. Wanda B. Campbell dares to take this book to another level...a level that I don't think too many authors have really obtained. Illusions is a real page turner. This is a book that you'll want to read start to finish without putting it down. Denise was truly an authentic character. You could understand her frustration and her denial of her husband's secret. With Denise by his side, he was able to stand and admit that he is not perfect. What I enjoyed most about this book is that Ms. Campbell did not portray Bryce to an untouchable Pastor. He was just as human as anyone else. Illusions was a very satisfying read with true to life characters with real life problems. I cannot wait to read the next book by Wanda B. Step To This is a fun, fast read by Nikki Carter. Carter has written a story about a remarkable young lady who is faced with choices. I love that the character is an average teen who marches to her own beat and has issues, yet doesn't mind sticking up for herself. I also enjoy that the book is a Christian teen book that is not preachy and adds to the story providing readers with authentic characters and situations. Let Me Just Say This

Kevin and Cheryl Goldman are a loving, couple with two children, the big house, luxury cars, and a successful business that Kevin and his best friend are partners. The grass appears to be extra green from the outside, but on the inside it is truly a concrete jungle. The facade they portray is so twisted and warped that it is sickening. Kevin is an abusive and cheating husband and father that is domineering, evil, and disgusting.

Let Me Just Say This addresses abuse, low self esteem, and the impact both have on relationships, whether it be with spouses, children, friends, or extended family members. It also looks at the consequences that the victims and the aggressors face with the chain reaction. I did not find this to be an interesting read. It was very challenging at best to finish. If you ‘re looking for a read centered on abusive relationships, this would be the one for you. The editing was lacking, and for a sequel to follow...I found myself questioning the reasoning. The characters were all lackluster, the storyline was not intriguing, and I did not find any scene empowering, encouraging, or moving to say the least. I did rate Let Me Just Say This with 3 stars, but only for the time, effort and the accomplishment of completion.

She's recently broken up with Michael, a man she swore was her soul mate. That is until a young cutie named Sean enters the scenario, and has her doubting all of her preconceived notions.

Tina, is a single mom that finished college despite her status and broken heart. Shauna skipped college to raise her siblings after her parents death. She meets Keith who's a successful surgeon and he's willing to give her the world without his presence more often than not. Dark Indiscretions is a novel about nine short erotica stories from the women’s perspective. Secrets, planning and indiscretions are needed in order to have success. Good girls who have a bad side are revealed in the most intimate settings. I enjoyed the novel, and the storylines were very believable. Thoughts come to mind while reading the book, but then they are spelled out in this novel. I think the book served it purpose in that it gave the perspectives from women in different walks of life, careers, and ethnicities. Dark Indiscretions would also be a good read for men as well. If there is something lacking in your relationship, you need to handle it...or believe me, someone else will.

Prey For Love

When hit man for hire Alex "Lex" Walker realizes that the one woman in his life he has always trusted besides his mother has played him, how will the drama unfold? Sitting in the airport lounge in Miami, Lex is on his way back from a job when he lays eyes on the prettiest woman he has seen in a very long time. While sitting and talking to this mystery woman, there's a news flash of a deadly fire. Lex is confused because he knows he shot the suspect. He shakes it off and doesn't really pay it too much attention to it since he's trying to get to know this woman. On the next job, the same thing happens. They say three's a strike, right? Well while in Jamaica on one of the biggest jobs he has ever done, Lex finally figures out the mystery surrounding his new found love Chaine.

Chaine Grey also does hits for hire and doesn't think that Lex can handle what she does. When her cover is blown, instead of her coming completely clean with Lex, she leaves him high and dry in more ways then one.

I was a little apprehensive about reading Prey For Love because honestly the cover is a huge turn off. If you can get past that like I did, then you will love this story. Newcomer Leyton Wint draws you right into the story. He doesn't leave one thing uncovered, he develops his characters, and the wonderful storyline all draw you right in and doesn't stop. Even at the end of the story, you are like "Wow! That's It?" I fully enjoyed Prey For Love and look forward to reading more from Leyton Wint.

The People You Know, The Sex They Have is an erotic anthology made up of three stories. "Hall Monitor" is about a security guard named Eric who has become secretly smitten with a sexy executive name Gayle. Things start to heat up when Eric and Gayle finally have a face to face meeting. "The Kiln" is about a man named Lucious who starts working at Blaylock's Brickmaking with some mysterious co-workers. Lucious' new place of employment becomes even more interesting when he becomes attracted to his trainer Tammy. "Sahara's on a Plane to Munich" is about a college student name Sahara who is about the graduate. She's waiting for a marriage proposal from her long-time boyfriend but she's becoming more and more attracted to Ingo.

The People You Know, The Sex They Have is an interesting collection of short stories from Aubrey Leatherwood. Each of the stories had some unique elements and characters. The standout story was "The Kiln" due to brick making aspect of it. What would have made this anthology better is if there was clearer character development and more eroticism. The erotic elements are there, but it seems like there should have been a little more spice to put this collection over the top. The People You Know, The Sex They Have is still a decent erotica anthology.
