L. A. Banks
The Thirteenth

L.A. Banks came from out of nowhere at a time when we needed an African-American heroine and gave us Damali. Damali brought with her a family of Guardians that fans of the series have fallen head over heels for. The Thirteenth, which is the twelfth and final book in The Vampire Huntress Legend Series, is not the end of a legend; but the end of a series. The Thirteenth picks up where the last book, The Shadows, left off with the Neteru Guardian team still hiding out in Bermuda. To their surprise, the tide quickly turns as they learn that they have been labeled as America's Most Wanted Terrorists because the authorities thought that they attacked Washington, D.C. The world is in turmoil as hell has unleashed plagues that is slowly turning infected people into the walking dead. Things get worse as the Vampire Council finds the hidden sixth biblical seal and position the Anti-Christ for one last battle. The team is in a race against time to try and find the tools needed to put a stop to the Vampire Council's plans. Will the Neteru Guardian team be able to win the final battle?

Twelve books and this series still isn't boring. In the last book in the series, Ms. Banks takes you on a journey that rivals any other Vampire book. You experience the love and comradery of the Neteru Guardian family and most of all, you experience how a group of diverse people can come together in a time of crisis; despite the differences in beliefs. The Thirteenth is a page turner and a must read book that I highly recommend. As with any L.A. Banks VHL tale, you get a dash of drama and awesome battle scenes. You'll laugh, cry, and rejoice in the end.

Basketball Jones is a scandalously entertaining novel by E. Lynn Harris. Harris once again gives readers what they want with this fast-paced storyline. Fans of Harris' previous work will be delighted to see a small cameo of a beloved character from some prior novels. This story also had a surprising twist that will leave you speechless. Basketball Jones is full of shocking betrayal, blackmail and secrets that E. Lynn Harris is known for.

The Object Of His Protection

Drey St. John has just been delivered a major blow. His mother has just told him that the man he has considered his mentor (and whose murder case he is trying to solve) is his biological father. Now more than ever, Drey wants to find out who is responsible for the Senator's death and to make sure that his mother had no knowledge about it.

Charlene Anderson is a forensic scientist who has not had time for a relationship. Besides, no man wants an old virgin anyway. Charlene and Drey have had a working relationship for the past few years. But when Charlene's life is put in danger due to the fact she was trying to help Drey, that relationship becomes a lot of pleasure and just the right amount of business to keep Charlene safe.

Brenda Jackson always does a wonderful job pulling you into her stories. Her books just seem to flow, which makes them very readable. The Object of His Protection is the culminating story of the Braddock series. Mrs. Jackson did an excellent job of tying up lose ends and giving the series some closure.

Seduction and Lies is a wonderful book. The plot is excellently written. There are also several subplots that are very integral parts of the story that make it a phenomenal read. There are twists and turns that take you on an adventure in every chapter. Just when you think you have it figured out, Hill throws you for another loop. The character description also plays a very significant role in this story. Overall, Seduction and Lies is a great read!

Noire
Hittin' The Bricks

Growing up as a teenager is always hard. But when the people who love you can't protect you, who will? How can you overcome obstacles when you have no one to lean on?

Eva Patterson had it rough being 14 years old and on her own. Her mother allowed her to be abused mentally, physically, and sexually. Eva learned early to survive on her own. Her mother Racine was an addict who could care less about doing the basic things you are required to do as a parent, which is to provide food, shelter, and protection. That was evident when she allowed her young boyfriend Jahden to sexually abuse Eva and get her high on heroin. Eva was thrown to the wolves early on. After an confrontation with her mother, Eva is thrown out, not realizing she is with child. Eva becomes a woman in an instant, and her motherly instincts kick in and does what's right for the baby. But after overcoming the horrible things Eva has been through, will Eva get a second chance at life or will she remain in that vicious cycle of tragedy?

India, Eva's best friend, is in a race against time. Saint, her drug-dealing boyfriend, gave India a package to deliver. But when she messes up that deal, she will pay dearly. Eva agrees to look after India's little sister Rosa and her father. Will India lose her life for a mistake she made?

Fiyah Perez, Eva's cousin, shared an unique bond with her. He was always there when she needed him, and Eva even stayed with Fiyah and Aunt Milena to get away from her mother. But when Eva hears some devastating news about her mother, Fiyah puts his dreams of becoming the next big rapper on hold and is sent to Rikers after taking a case for Eva. Fiyah has to pull his weight in prison because paying a debt back is not about respect, it is a must. But will Fiyah sacrifice this debt by giving up his cousin Eva to someone who he knows is evil and a nutcase? Or will he become the ultimate sacrifice?

Mello, was a cool brother. He was hard-working, and about his business. He sold CDs, took photographs for a club called Bricks and a clothing line called Birthday Cake. He came into Eva's life for a reason. Mello showed Eva that there are real men out there that will love, cherish, and respect you. Mello showed Eva this world, and there is nothing he wouldn't do for her. He accepted her just the way she was, flaws and all. But when Fiyah gets out of prison, Mello will do everything he can to protect Eva, even if that includes confronting Fiyah about his plans.

Brody was not the one to play with. He commanded respect at all times. He had a thing for young girl and was known for branding girls with a "B" because they were his property. What Brody wanted, he got...and what he wanted was Eva. Brody looked out for Fiyah in Rikers, and he had to collect back on his debt. Brody ran Harlem and had a lot of connections, he was into the pornography business and had clubs. When Fiyah is released, he intends to make good on his debt. Will Brody get what he wants or is there an even bigger match for King Brody?

Noire does it again with Hittin' The Bricks. I am avid fan of Noire's and was left with no disappointment with this fantastic novel. The book started off with a compelling story of struggle and showed there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you cannot leave the past behind. Eva is a strong woman who overcame immense circumstances, and it just shows that even your own family will turn on you. Noire has definitely proved that writing is a craft and never fails with each novel I read. Noire is known for giving it to you straight to the point without holding back but with a touch of sensuality.

Regina Wheeler has been married to her high school sweetheart Matt for years and has never experienced sex with another man. But after suffering through countless episodes of dull and boring sex with her husband, Regina wonders if there are better options out there for her. She may not have to wonder long when Regina comes face to face with a handsome stranger. Meanwhile, Matt decides to have an affair with a young ghetto-fabulous woman name Onika. Matt thinks he has this affair with Onika under control until he becomes obsessed with her. Will Regina and Matt rekindle their relationship or will they become lost in their own fantasies?

One Taste is a deliciously erotic novella by Allison Hobbs. Hobbs once again pulls the reader into this story from the very first page. You feel the sexual and emotional frustration of Regina as she deals with Matt's indifference and a long ago tragedy that still haunts her. Some of Matt's actions are so appalling that you will be literally shaking your head. Of course, this story wouldn't complete without some sizzling erotic elements but there should have been a little more of them. One Taste is a spicy and quick read that you will be able to finish reading in a few hours. This is a good edition to the Strebor Quickiez collection.

Josephine

Josephine Best is an independent young woman that has her own beauty shop and she has her mind set on establishing a thriving business. She's a trailblazer in a time when it's frowned upon for ladies to have dreams that don't include a husband and children. JoJo, her mother Cecelia, and her sister-in-law Belle are maintaining the homefront while their men are away serving in the war. Sick and injured African-American soldiers take up residence while healing at a local home, and the citizens are called upon to lend a helping hand in any manner they can. While assisting the soldiers, JoJo and her best friend Trudy become enamored by two soldiers...and the courting begins.

Adam Morgan is a notorious playboy and due to serious injury, he finds himself recovering in the home of the Best ladies. To his shock, JoJo who he deemed ‘Pest,' has blossomed into a beautiful young lady that stirs a foreign emotion in him. He tries to divert his interest while challenging JoJo to ignore the chemistry they have.

Josephine is one of Ms. Jenkins' earlier works and it is evident in this read. Ms. Jenkins intertwines a dose of romance, chivalry, jealousy, stealing, and chauvinism in this book. While it was a good read, Josephine lacked any real type of action. It had just a few ripples and no real excitement, but it was a wholesome, relaxing read nonetheless. In reflecting on this novel and her recent release Jewel, it's a great difference. The author has grown tremendously in her style, which is natural. Whether it's a suspenseful novel or prehistoric read, I'm always looking for a Beverly Jenkins' read!

I Promise has a love square vibe. The main characters are constantly developing and changing, making them a very vital part of the plot. The setting is also an essential part to the story. Where each event takes place is made more significant due to the settings. Byrd is an excellent writer that has a writing style that flows. Tale Of A Train Wreck Lifestyle

Lisa Henderson cannot figure out why life has dealt her the hand she is holding. But through it all, she tries to keep on going and live out her dreams, regardless of everything negative around her. Growing up in Queens with her family, Lisa always knew she wasn't her mother's favorite. When their father left and they were forced to move to Brooklyn with their grandmother, the level of hate that her own mother harbored toward her really came out. Trying to stay positive and finish high school with hopes of going to college to become a journalist, Lisa goes through so many twists and turns that you forget that this is only a story and wish you could reach out and help her.

Two favorite characters, Nikkisi Ling and Joshua Tune, resurface. Josh's first wife Parker is dying, and Josh feels obligated to go say goodbye in person. Not realizing (or not caring) how dangerous that can be for Nikki, Josh comes back to New York and dives head first back into his old ways. He calls Nikki and begs for help. She goes against her better judgment and returns to help Josh only to find him doing worst then ever.

Wandering the streets of New York, Nikki and Lisa run into each other more then once and decide that maybe they can trust each other. With both women alone in the world and no one to look out for them but themselves, they both survive the best way they know how.

Crystal Lacey Winslow is one of my top favorite female authors. She not only gives you a whole new story in Tale Of A Train Wreck Lifestyle, but she incorporates Nikkisi's story as if she belonged right there. She weaves their lives together so well that you don't realize that this is the third part to Life Love and Loneliness. I enjoyed the story because the message was loud and clear: You never know what makes a person do the things they do in life. I am sure plenty of people could relate to this story. Everyone's situation is different, but the message is the same. The way we are raised really does have a big impact on the kind of adult we become. I am sad to see Ms. Winslow take a break from writing, but I understand her need.

Bestselling authors Candice Dow & Daaimah S. Poole came together to bring us We Take This Man. The story is told by both women that are involved with one man. One is his actual wife and the other is his mistress. The story goes back and forth between both women and what they think of one another. The storyline is very funny because these women are a mess and each is determine to get the other out of the picture. Once you start reading this book, you won't be able to put it down and you're going to want to know what happens next. But this story is truly unbelievable, even for it to be fiction. I would recommend We Take This Man for anyone who loves a little drama, no matter how crazy it is.

Quentin Carter
Stained Cotton

Qu'ban and O'ban Cartez are two brothers wilding out in the streets of Kansas City, MO while running drugs, women, and fast cars. Katrina and Nancy Miller are sisters on college break, looking for fun and excitement in the ghetto with some real thugs! The two sets of siblings go hard in the streets as they each manipulate each other for curiosity's sake. Qu'ban and O'ban and their crew all seem to have a fetish for ‘pretty pink toes' and they pursue this fixation. In the midst of all the wild, carnal sex, the brothers are trying to dodge the police and their jealous rivals as well as their ‘so called' friends.

Stained Cotton does indeed have an original storyline with a plot that touched on a bit of everything. In reading this novel, I felt that the storyline had no true direction or plan. The sub-plots were disorganized and the characters lacked true definition. Stained Cotton addressed several issues such as the ‘forbidden fruit' theme that black men and white women have been drawn to for decades. Mr. Carter also displayed the prejudice that parents expose their children to, although it was pretty twisted in this read. In reflecting back on this read, I am still unable to find the majority of the scenes realistic and that proved to be its downfall. The path that the author took the family on started out believable, but ended recklessly. This felt more like a rush job, and I believe with a bit more time and effort, Stained Cotton could have really been a great read.

Meanwhile, his mother Madeline was not going to let her son get cut out of his rightful place in the family's business. She was determined to do whatever it took to get Joel kicked out of the company, and gain control of the business for her family.

Not telling anyone that he is dying, Dave gets very ill and needs to make amends with all of his children. Unfortunately, not all of his kids are inclined to have the family reunion he was hoping for. He tries to advise the kids that will talk to him that they should always keep God first no matter what. As time went on, the business grew and Joel captures national attention. But his desire for more power could be his downfall.

In Chosen, Patricia Haley does a fine job of showing the readers how difficult it is to forgive even though sometimes it can be the toughest decision you've ever made. She ties in how important God's mercy is...and without it, no decision that is made without God is a good decision at all. Throughout the book, she shows how family can be at odds and how influential family is. She also shows how important it is to retain your faith. Patricia Haley did an outstanding job on each person's outlook and how, without forgiveness, no problem can truly be solved.

Darrin Bainbridge was a twenty-something freelance writer looking for his "big story." He thinks he's found it when he sees a minister on TV preaching to a crowd of 10,000 worshippers. Darrin thinks these mega church ministers are scam artists looking to cash in on someone's blessing. He's on a mission to expose this dynamic minister by the name of Bishop Kumal Prentiss. He decides it's time to bring down this minister and show his congregation that the Lord's blessings are not for sale. So, Darrin decides to go on assignment to Atlanta, GA where Bishop Prentiss presides over his flock at Freedom of Life Ministries. He thinks that by telling his readers about what goes on in these mega churches, it will get him a little exposure and he can stop living off his parents and make a life for himself. That was until he went to a service at Freedom of Life and met the Bishop's daughter.

Emoni Prentiss is the eldest daughter of Bishop Kumal Prentiss. Being his assistant, Emoni makes sure that his sermons are on point and keeps the church running from behind the scenes. She is a devout Christian, and has never had a boyfriend or even dated. Emoni has prayed that the Lord would bring her a Christian man that loves the Lord and would love her as well. One Sunday morning, while doing some typical assignments before the morning worship started, Emoni felt someone looking at her. She looked up and saw this fine man looking and smiling at her. She just knew he had to be looking at someone else and not her. But with just one look, "Mr. Adonis" would answer her prayers. But it's always been said...be careful what you wish for.

When Darrin and Emoni meet, sparks fly and not just between them. A couple of other folks in the sanctuary notice the chemistry between them. Darrin is there for one reason and one reason only: To bring down the fake preacher who happens to be the father of the lady he is attracted too. Soon, Darrin realizes he's got caught up in the spirit and does not know what to do about it. He never thought that he would come to this mega church and become a changed man. Emoni never thought someone that looked like Darrin would go for just a common church girl who happens to be the minister's daughter. Soon she would realize that when the Lord speaks, you better be listening.

The Bishop's Daughter by Tiffany L. Warren makes you try to tap into God's Grace. She does an exceptional job by entwining each character and defining their attitude towards God and church. She gives details about each character and what has happened to make them different from one another. This book shows you how the flesh is weak when you're starting out your walk with the Lord. She gives very good examples of that through Darrin Bainbridge. You realize that once you're saved, you're not necessarily ready to give up the ways of the world. Throughout The Bishop's Daughter, there are different scriptures being quoted, prayers being prayed, and sermons being preached. This may be a lot for some to digest, but not for an avid reader of Christian Fiction. It was enough for you to look at your walk with God and how close you are with Him.

Endy
A Deal With Death

Nina Boyd is the mother of two teenaged boys and is a functioning drug addict. Nina thinks that she has her addiction under control, but her sons Malik and Marquis know that's far from the truth. Malik is nineteen and already considers himself a man. He drops out of high school and decides to make his money on the streets under a well-known drug dealer named Todd "Death" McClain. Death sees a lot of potential in Malik. But Malik has other ideas and doesn't realize that once you make a deal with Death, the only way out is in a body bag. Malik's younger brother Marquis has just graduated from high school and is on his way to college, but his older brother's street dealings start to interfere with his own life. Marquis is also determined to make sure Nina gets clean once and for all.

A Deal With Death is a gritty page-turner by Endy. Endy gives you a realistic look into how the drug game impacts the life of a mother and her sons. You see how much denial Nina is in when she gets further and further into her addiction. Readers will also see how Malik and Marquis deal with Nina in very different ways. The main focus of this novel was about the damaging effects of drugs, but there was so much more. There was a good dose of family drama between Nina, her children, and their imprisoned father Wiz. This also added the right amount of realism to this novel. This story wouldn't be complete without some jaw-dropping twists and backstabbing that will keep your attention to the very end. A Deal With Death is a thought-provoking novel that will be a sure delight for readers.

E. R. McNair
The Hood Rats

Gary, Indiana is the home of four 'friends'...if that's what they call their relationship. Bre is the peacemaker of the group. CeeCee is the stunner being that she's wifey to one of the key players in their hood. Nesha holds the reins as the firecracker, ready to get it on and popping. And Nicky, the Benedict Arnold of the four since she has no loyalty to anyone. Nicky secretly covets CeeCee's man while sexing him every chance she gets. Nesha is slanging more bricks than most men in their hood. CeeCee is looking for a come-up with a bigger playa in the game...even if means humiliating DayDay, the father of her children and her lover of years. Bre is the quiet, smart one that has aspirations of something other than being a baby mama, someone's jumpoff, or anything else of that nature. She still believes that friends should have each other's back and that there is true love waiting for her.

E.R. McNair has penned another hood novel with the infamous four hood chicks. Even though The Hood Rats was a decent read, the storyline really suffered from no originality. There were a few grammatical errors, the characters were all mediocre, and their plights were pretty mundane.  On the flipside, there was a bit of drama, a lot of betrayal, and a touch of loyalty. But all in all, The Hood Rats did not pull me in with the usual anticipated anxiety in getting to the ending.  With a bit more passion and maybe a different approach from the usual hood tales, I believe that Ms. McNair has potential. I commend Ms. McNair for her accomplishment in the literary field and wish her the best!!!

Shevaughn Robinson has a lot of pressure on her since becoming Portsborough, New York's first African-American female detective. Her job becomes even more challenging when she starts investigating a series of horrific murders. Unbeknownst to Shevaughn, the killer has his eyes set not only on his victims, but on her as well. Shevaughn also has to deal with an investigative reporter named Tony O'Brien who is getting way too close for comfort. Tony may get more than he bargained for when he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a criminal investigation. It's a race against time as Shevaughn tries to catch the Ace of Hearts killer before he claims another victim.

Ace of Hearts is a spellbinding thriller by Jean Holloway. Holloway grabs your attention from the very first page. The character development for this story is what really makes this novel stand out. You feel the anxiety of Shevaughn as she tries to catch this very sadistic killer. There are also some good secondary characters such as Tony O'Brien that add just the right touch to this book. Readers will find themselves glued to the pages as this story unfolds at a rapid pace. There's also a sort of cliffhanger ending to this novel that could lead to another book. Ace of Hearts is emotionally-charged and suspenseful. Hopefully, this is the start of a good detective series by Jean Holloway.

Kareem Henson
Trapped In The Middle

Have you ever wondered how people from two different walks of life could have something in common? What about the choices you are forced to make when you are put in life or death situations? How would you react? Would you side with the enemy to save your life, even when it goes against your own morals and beliefs?

Steven "Bruno" Sanders was meticulous with his trade. He studied, researched, and used strategic methods to make sure his plan would be a success. Bruno didn't have a regular nine-to-five, he was a professional bank robber. In the midst of his fifth robbery, Bruno's life changes forever when he enters the Hotel Dumer. Will Bruno roll with the punches to protect his money, or could a hotel room error cost him his life?

Detective Ryan Chambers was a 16-year veteran on the police force with a 90% conviction rate. He was an expert in his field with a lot of connections. With very few enemies, Detective Chambers exerted confidence, but working with his ex-wife Detective Lopez was a challenge in itself. When a hostage situation erupts, will Detective Chambers keep his cool and come out on top with another victory?

Detective Lopez was a true solider, having been shot, stabbed, and hit by a car all while on duty as an officer. But that pain and hurt couldn't even compare to the pain from her unfaithful ex-husband Detective Chambers who she sees on a daily basis. Lopez is assigned to keep up with Steven "Bruno" Sanders, which leads her to the Hotel Dumer and forever changes her life.

Amanda Vodka is the nineteen-year-old heir to a billion dollar liquor company owned by her great-grandfather S.P. Vodka. Losing her parents in a tragic plane crash, Amanda moved to Delaware for a fresh start. She wanted to live a "normal" life where people didn't recognize her or know her worth. But on a relaxation visit to Hotel Dumer, will the mistakes of her grandfather drastically affect her life? Will she pay for something she didn't even know existed?

Hotel Dumer is where three people come together in a hostage situation. With a reason to live, a plan is devised and Steve, Amanda and Lopez plan to make it to freedom...but not without a few twists and turns. Money is put on the table, so that's even a sweeter reward. But sometimes destiny doesn't always play in your favor. Who will come out on top?

Trapped in the Middle was a good read. I enjoyed how the author Kareem Henson put people from different walks of life together in a situation where they had to work as a team. Survival is a game of the fittest. You have to put your differences aside if you want to make it. I think the storyline was very creative and original, and the novel held my attention from when I first started reading the opening pages. Trapped in the Middle showed that no one is immune from situations that may put your life in jeopardy. I would have enjoyed it more if the author would have divulged a little more about the captors and how they were put in the situation they were in. But overall, I still enjoyed the book.
