Alicia
Coston
Alicia Coston was born and raised in Virginia Beach,
Virginia. As a child, she discovered she had three
talents. Her father passed down two of them which were
singing and drawing. But the third-Alicia's uncanny magic
with words-remained the most prevalent. She wrote and
illustrated her first book at the tender age of eight.
It wouldn't be long before Alicia realized that children's
books no longer intrigued her, sneaking off to read her
first adult fiction novel Daddy was a Number Runner.
Alicia continued her creative writing into her teens with
intentions of entertaining and touching the emotions of
others. She did so through poetry, spoken word, and short
stories. By that time, Alicia also became a songwriter as
she put lyrics to the music that her brother/producer
KayCost created. Alicia pursued a psychology degree at Old
Dominion University for a few years before realizing that
a practical career would not dismiss her passion for
writing. Her college experience did help Alicia to begin
weaving short tales that invoked thought and intrigue.
While working as a supervisor at a non-profit organization
for the mentally disabled and cleaning houses on the side,
Alicia began to fulfill her dream of becoming an author.
She finished writing her first book in six months. When
she is not answering questions about her debut erotic
thriller She's Killin' Me, she performs as Lanae
Jewalz with her partner JusBiznes in a hip-hop group
DiverCity. Alicia strives to receive a grant to begin a
creative writing and music program for at-risk youth. She
currently resides in Virginia Beach where she runs her own
publishing company, Indigo Press.

Urban Reviews: Start by
telling our readers about She's Killin' Me.
Alicia Coston:
She's Killin' Me is
not just an erotic thriller; amidst the carnal sex it is
also a psychological whirlwind. Readers will be swept into a
story full of characters who are playing a role even within
the book. This is a common tale of fatal attraction with not
so common circumstances; it is a tale told completely from
the mind of a married, Italian restaurateur, Chris Balducci,
who hooks up with the wrong black seductress, Connie a.k.a.
Candy. Race, class, and universal lust will wreak havoc in
their affair turned tug-of-war. But who will win?
Urban Reviews:
Where did you come up with the idea for this novel?
Alicia Coston:
I used to clean houses
for the wealthy (in fact that is how I put money towards my
debut novel). One day I encountered an irate customer who
refused to pay me for my services because I had turned a
vase the wrong way in his home. Suffice it to say, I was
angry after all of my hard work and I went home and started
writing. I turned that customer into a main character of
She's Killin' Me and was able to stick it to him
throughout the entire book.
Urban Reviews: How
did you start your literary career?
Alicia Coston:
I have been reading
adult fiction since the age of eight and I wrote and
illustrated my first book around the same time. I have also
always written poetry and am a huge fan of spoken word and
its artists.
Urban Reviews: Do
you have any upcoming projects?
Alicia Coston:
I recently created a
perfume which was inspired by She's Killin' Me and
will be introduced during the Afrocentric Bookshowcase 2008.
I am also currently working on my second novel, The Men
Who Sleep With My Husband.
Urban Reviews: What
have you learned about the book industry so far? Is what you
expected it to be?
Alicia Coston:
The book industry is
exactly what I expected it to be only because I did my
homework first. The majority of people in this industry,
particularly independent publishers and sellers, have been
very supportive as we are probably taking a journey in the
same boat. Best-selling authors show love if you are a good
writer and it makes you feel appreciated because someone who
has been down that road and is now successful is giving you
praise and advice. The number one thing I have learned is
that no one can sell a book like its creator and its creator
must sell themselves and their purpose first.
Urban Reviews: Do
you have any favorite authors or books?
Alicia Coston:
One of my favorite
books, and the first adult fiction I ever read, was Daddy
Was A Number Runner. I am also a huge fan of Toni
Morrison and, of course, Zane.
Urban Reviews: Have
you gotten any sound advice from fellow authors?
Alicia Coston:
Fellow authors have
shown a huge amount of respect for what I do. They have
encouraged me to be a trailblazer, no matter who tries to
mute my voice, and to hustle 150% of the time everywhere I
can. Most importantly, one must know that they can always
get better and to never, ever give up.
Urban Reviews: Name
one thing that the world does not know about Alicia Coston -
the person?
Alicia Coston:
Despite the fact that I
am known as the First Lady of Erotic Suspense, I eventually
want to write a collection of children's books...under
another pseudonym of course! |
