Urban Reviews: Tell us about
your debut novel Another Woman's Husband. Angel Mechelle: Another Woman's Husband is the story of next door neighbors Bree and Dre. Instant physical attraction brings this pair together...love keeps them fighting to stay together. The only problem is Dre is married and when his wife, Neecy gets wind of the deception that is happening right under her nose, the battle is on. Neecy is not willing to let go of her husband (even if he is in love with another woman) and Bree is not willing to give up her soul mate. It is the story of being torn between what is right, and what "feels" right. Urban Reviews: Where did you come up with the storyline for this book? Angel Mechelle: The storyline was inspired by actual events. Urban Reviews: What things did you do to educate yourself about the writing process prior to putting out this book? Angel Mechelle: Aside from being in a similar situation, I watched many friends going through the same thing. Whether they were the "other woman" or the wife sitting at home waiting for her husband, I've witnessed this scenario played out over and over again. My education was experience. Urban Reviews: How did you land your deal with Shannon Holmes' new publishing company? Angel Mechelle: Toward the end of last year (2007), I was putting the finishing touches on Another Woman's Husband. I was preparing to self publish and was looking for every opportunity to get my name out there beforehand. During this time, Shannon was calling for submissions for the Anthology Hood2Hood. I submitted a short story to him and it was accepted. We corresponded for several weeks on the project. He asked about Another Woman's Husband, who I was signed with, etc. When I told him I planned to self publish, he told me to hold off and asked to read my book. I sent him my manuscript (which he finished in a couple of days), he loved it, and the rest is history. It was a huge blessing. Urban Reviews: Do you have any upcoming projects that you are working on? Angel Mechelle: I am working on several projects. I have a short story that will be featured in the anthology Flirt, which is due to release next year. I am also toying with the idea of a sequel to Another Woman's Husband as well as an untitled manuscript. Urban Reviews: With so many AA Fiction titles being released, how has it been for you in regards to trying to promote your book and attract readers? Angel Mechelle: I think that it is great that there are so many titles for our readers to choose from! I haven't run into any issues as far as promoting my book. Another Woman's Husband is a fresh story, my writing style is different, and so far the book has been standing out as far as other titles on the same subject. Having Shannon's name associated with the project doesn't hurt either. Readers may pick up the book for that reason, but when they open the book, Angel Mechelle's words are what keep them reading. Urban Reviews: Who or what was your inspiration to even become an author? Angel Mechelle: Back when E. Lynn Harris was hot on the scene, he was very accessible, his fans could email and write him and he actually responded. I felt that this "writing thing" had always been in me...from way back. But I had no idea where to start or what to do. I emailed E. Lynn and explained my dilemma. He responded and told me to never give up. He told me to just write and write and write. A week later he sent a book titled Fiction Lessons for African American Authors and also a book with blank pages to write the lessons in. The moment I started working on the exercises, I decided I was going to write a book. Urban Reviews: What are some of your all-time favorite books or authors? Angel Mechelle: Too many to name. I read all types of books from all authors. If I had to name a few, E. Lynn Harris, Shannon Holmes, Eric Jerome Dickey, Carl Weber, Da'Neen Hale, Miasha, Tracy Brown, Connie Briscoe, Bebe Moore Campbell, Kimberla Lawson Roby, Zane, Danielle Steel, Jackie Collins and the list goes on and on forever... Urban Reviews: As a new author, what would you have done differently in preparing to release your debut novel? Angel Mechelle: I really don't regret anything that has been done as far as the release of my book. If there was anything it would probably be getting a little more familiar with the marketing aspect of the business. Urban Reviews: At the end of the day, what do you want the world to know most about Angel Mechelle? Angel Mechelle: I would like the world to know that I am just like you. I've been through things in life, but I didn't let them break me or stop me from achieving my dreams. I'm just beginning. |
