 Inside Out
with Anya Nicole

Anya Nicole

Anya Nicole was born and raised in Philadelphia. Realizing as a child that both her household and neighborhood was plagued with drugs and crime, Anya strived to break the mold and became the first person in her family to graduate from college. As an adult, Anya became driven to help the same community in which she could have easily become a product of. She currently counsels young adults at an alternative program who have dropped out of high school and are seeking a GED. Anya believes that it is her responsibility to help young people realize their full potential.

Writing has always been Anya's way of relieving the pain in which she has seen around her. As early as the age of fourteen, she has always kept a journal of poetry and short stories by her side. Her debut novel Corporate Corner Boyz is Anya's way of showing the world that not all hustling is illegal; when you're educated and from the streets, you have the best of both worlds. Anya continues to live in Philadelphia and is currently working on her next novel.

Urban Reviews:  Tell our readers about Corporate Corner Boyz.
Anya Nicole:  Well, Corporate Corner Boyz is about....two men from the streets of Philadelphia who own a successful record label. They allow ambition, success, and most importantly money, to test their friendship.

Urban Reviews:  Where did the idea for this novel come from?
Anya Nicole:  My idea for Corporate Corner Boyz came from men I know who have lived the street life and turned themselves around to become successful, well-educated, businessmen.

Urban Reviews:  What are your goals as a writer?  Is it something you would like to do long-term?
Anya Nicole:  My goals as a writer are to continue to write and grow in my skill. I would also like to branch out and try new genres. I would love to continue to write in the long term and collaborate with other authors.

Urban Reviews:  What kinds of roadblocks have you faced in your journey to being published?
Anya Nicole:  I have been rejected by several agents. I never allowed that to deter me from my goal of getting my novel out there.

Urban Reviews:  What things are you doing to help promote your book to the masses?
Anya Nicole:  I’m currently touring, I have done book club meetings, interviews, and I also use Myspace to promote my work.

Urban Reviews:  How do you feel about the state of African-American fiction?  Did you know it would be this competitive?
Anya Nicole:  There are so many good writers in African American fiction right now. Self-published authors are gaining just as much if not more respect than traditional published authors. I expected it to be competitive out here that's why no matter where I go, I'm telling people about my novel.

Urban Reviews:  Are you working on an upcoming project and when can do you think it will be released?
Anya Nicole:  Judgment Day, The sequel to Corporate Corner Boyz will be my next project. I'm also working on another project which is more of a contemporary African America novel.

Urban Reviews:  Do you have any favorite authors or books that you enjoy reading?
Anya Nicole:  I enjoy reading Moses Miller, K'wan, Treasure E. Blue, Anna J, Miasha, and Brooke Greene just to name a few.

Urban Reviews:  What do you like to do outside of writing? (hobbies, activities, etc.)
Anya Nicole:  Outside of writing, I do a lot of reading, shopping, and enjoying good friends.  I'm also very interested in psychology and how the mind works. I'm also in the process of preparing for my first child.

Urban Reviews:  What else would you like to share with us about yourself or your debut novel?
Anya Nicole:  Writing Corporate Corner Boyz has really showed me discipline; writing a novel is hard work. I hope those reading my novel enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It was truly a journey for me and after a few chapters, the book seemed to write itself.
