Inside Out
with Cereka Cook

Cereka Cook

During her younger years in school, Cereka Cook wrote a lot of short stories and a children’s theatre production. Most of her creativity came from reading. Her mother used to buy books for her and her siblings several times each month. And although her mother stressed the importance of reading, Cereka enjoyed the characters and the “escapism” in books.

It wasn’t until 2002 that she became serious about writing. She was at work one day and had an idea of what she wanted to write about. There was a strong need for her to “get it all out” on paper. So, when she got home that same night Cereka immediately made an outline with characters, names, ages and occupations and the rest is history.

Cereka met James D. Jackson of Regal Publishing who assisted her with the editing and formatting of her novel. She ultimately decided to go with the P.O.D. (print-on-demand) option. In July 2004, her first novel Extreme Circumstances was finally available. And although she was excited that her work was finally in book form, she would soon learn that this was not the best route for her nor was it the most cost-effective.

After another chance meeting with best-selling author Richard Jeanty, Cereka Cook would ultimately land a contract with his company RJ Publications. They gave her novel a face-lift and re-launched it in March 2007. She likes to refer to it as Extreme Circumstances-the remix. Incidentally, she also plans to take this novel to the big screen.

Urban Reviews:  Tell us about Extreme Circumstances.
Cereka Cook:
Extreme Circumstances is a fiction novel and is based on relationships. There are four main characters, (two men and two women) who learn about themselves through everyday life just as we do in real life. There is a lot of drama involved, but life lessons the be learned by reading it. I touch on self-esteem, confidence, alcoholism and child abuse. So when you read it, you will actually be able to picture scenes from a movie rather than chapters in a book.

Urban Reviews:  Where did you come up with the idea for this novel?
Cereka Cook:
Not exactly sure how I came up with the story. One day it just clicked and when I got home I just got a scratch piece of paper and wrote down the characters names, ages and occupations and formed the story around the characters. Or rather, I made them fit into the storyline and formed their personalities based on that.

Urban Reviews:  You are currently signed under RJ Publications. Can you tell us how you got into the business and what led you to your first book deal?
Cereka Cook:
I had seen Richard of RJ Publications a few times at book signings. He gave me a lot of advice and information on things that could potentially help me in the "book biz" and to get my name out there as an author. One of the things I needed was money, which I didn't have at the time. I was very serious about "moving" books and carving a name for myself in the literary world, so I was realistic about my situation at the time and I waited. A year later, there I was still ready to go, but this time w/some money to get things started.

Urban Reviews:  Can we get a sneak peak at your next novel?
Cereka Cook:  The next novel is incomplete and untitled and it isn't copy written yet. Once that is done (in few weeks), I will forward you all a tidbit.

Urban Reviews:  What challenges have you faced being a new author?
Cereka Cook:  Although I know my story is great and people love it, there are still a lot of readers that won't give you a chance unless you're an established writer. They want the big names like Eric Jerome Dickey, Terry McMillan, and Michael Baisden. Nothing wrong with that, but in order for the unknown writers to become known, we have to be given a chance.

Urban Reviews:  What is your impression of the book industry so far? Is it all that you hoped it would be?
Cereka Cook:  It's definitely hard work, but no one is gonna promote me better than I can. But overall, I would say I am absolutely having a blast. I love the e-mails and comments that people send about my first novel, via my website.

Urban Reviews:  Is there anything that you know now that you wish you would've known before the release of your novel?
Cereka Cook:  Initially, when I went the self-published, print-on-demand route I didn't have any bar codes or ISBN's which are vital for this business. Distribution is important as well. It's just like the music industry, everything (sales) is tracked through those bar codes and you need a distributor to "push" your product.

Urban Reviews:  What do you want people to know most about you?
Cereka Cook:  I'm just a regular person with some great ideas and stories and I want to "edu-tain" the world through my books.
