Urban Reviews: Tell our
readers about Don't Say You Do If You Don't.
Charles Burgess:
Well, Don't Say You Do If You Don't is about
a real estate broker married to the woman of his dreams...a
nurse named Emily Jordan who is the mother of three. After ten
years, he decides to have extra-marital activity with a
client's niece.
Urban Reviews: How did you
come up with the idea for this book?
Charles Burgess:
The idea just spilled out as I re-read my first
novel titled Homies.
Urban Reviews: What made you
want to get into writing? Is it something you see
yourself doing long term?
Charles Burgess:
Funny you ask. I wrote a story for some "hard to
please" people that were pleased by it. It was titled
Time Out For Justice, and it really inspired me to
continue. Yes, right now I'm doing it full time.
Urban Reviews: Name at least
one thing that you would have done differently in regards to
your book?
Charles Burgess:
Not saying it's the perfect urban romance novel,
but I can't think of anything I would have done differently.
Urban Reviews: With so many
books coming out these days, what things are you doing
to promote your book?
Charles Burgess:
There are a lot of books being printed, so I do
different events here throughout the city of Milwaukee. I'm
also going to be branching them out to other areas. Facebook
has been good to me, and Tagged.com as well.
Urban Reviews: You created
Underground Publications and have several authors signed to
the company. What did you do to prepare yourself for
the launch of your own company?
Charles Burgess:
Well, thanks for asking. Underground Publications
has some great writers thus far, and we are looking to grow
the team. I guess going through what I went through with the
company who published my first novel gave me preparation
enough to do it. I just simply incorporated myself with
a few editors, graphic people, and a very knowledgeable
printer. I then put together a pricing chart that would
be author friendly and went forward.
Urban Reviews: Do you have
any upcoming projects that we can look forward to?
Charles Burgess:
Yes. Bee-Wildered should be released by the
end of November. I'm also working on a three book trilogy.
Urban Reviews: Do you have
any favorite authors or books?
Charles Burgess:
That's a tough one. My favorite style of writing is
Sidney Sheldon. Now I read mostly self-published authors, I
have acquired many friends who write all over and I tell
you...they are good. Julia Press-Simmons, Shalona Amos,
Venesha Hope, and every author with Underground Publications.
I'm slowing building a library.
Urban Reviews: What things
have you experienced that you would like to advise other
aspiring authors about?
Charles Burgess:
Stop looking for that big deal and get your resume
together. The best way to do that is to self-publish and get
your numbers behind you. Big publishing houses are looking to
make money and not really invest anymore.
Urban Reviews: Is there
anything else you would like to share about yourself or your
novel?
Charles Burgess:
Yeah. Part two, Say What You Mean, Mean What You
Say, will come out sometime in 2010. |
