with Daaimah S. Poole

Daaimah S. Poole

Daaimah S. Poole was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from Temple University with a B.A. in journalism in 2003. While attending Temple, Daaimah worked almost every job imaginable -- receptionist, car salesperson, bill collector, waitress, tutor, and a substitute teacher. She would later say she was unintentionally doing character research.

Daaimah completed her first novel Yo Yo Love at the age of 19, without owning a computer or knowing how to type. Originally published by Oshun Publishing, and later picked up by Kensington Books, Yo Yo Love went on to become an Essence Magazine Best Seller. Her subsequent novels, Got A Man, What’s Real, Ex-Girl to The Next Girl, and All I Want is Everything have cemented her reputation as author on the move.

Urban Reviews:  Can you tell us about your story in Diamond Playgirls?
Daaimah S. Poole:
My characters name is Tamara Murphy, she is party promoter in Atlanta. Ga. She is doing well there, but gets a job offer to open a new nightclub in New York City called the Onyx Lounge

Urban Reviews:  What inspired you to write this story?
Daaimah S. Poole:
It just came to me. My character had to move to New York City so I wanted it to be a culture shock for her. So I picked Atlanta because I’m familiar with the area and it is very different than NYC.

Urban Reviews:  You also recently released your own book called All I Want Is Everything.  Can you tell us about this book?
Daaimah S. Poole:  All I Want Is Everything is about a woman name Kendra who dreams are delayed for seven years. She decides she wants to go after her dream of becoming a singer again. She gets a manager, a record deal, and begins to realize it’s hard to chase your dream. I also wanted the expose the ills of the music industry. So many times you will see the most talented person and listen to their CD and think why the hell is this person not double platinum. Why don’t people know about this person? Also, I wanted to show that nothing in life comes easy. People see that Alicia Keys is a successful artist, but they don’t know she had like two deals fall through before she made it big. Or that Kanye West had a hard time getting signed. Even 50 Cent was dropped and passed all around before he found success.

Urban Reviews:  Can you tell us about your literary career?
Daaimah S. Poole:  In my career, I’ve covered a variety of topics and just wrote about whatever seemed interesting. My first novel Yo Yo Love was about a woman and her chaotic love life. Got A Man was two women fighting over the same man. What’s Real three women going on a girlfriend trip to Miami. Ex- Girl to the Next Girl was the continuation of Got A Man. All I Want is Everything is a about a woman trying to follow her dreams.

Urban Reviews:  Do you find it difficult to come up with different stories?
Daaimah S. Poole:
It gets harder and easier with each book. Easier because you can say okay I did this before...I know I have it in me to write an entire book. The hard part is coming up with new ideas character names and saying things you haven’t in previous book and staying original. But life is inspiring and changes everyday so there is always something to write about.

Urban Reviews:  Can we get a sneak peak at your next novel?
Daaimah S. Poole:
The new book is A Rich Man’s Baby. It’s about two women that wake up one morning and say the hell with working. They decide they want to get pregnant by someone rich and get child support check.

Urban Reviews:  You were recently selected for the 'I Will Not Lose' Roc-A-Wear promotion.  How did this come about?
Daaimah S. Poole:
I was on Hot 97.com and I heard Jay- Z doing an interview with Angie Martinez . He mentioned the contest and on a whim I went on the website and got the details. I called a friend and asked him to help me prepare my video. I submitted my video and I was selected and will appear in their Spring 2008 promotions.

Urban Reviews:  What would you say to anyone out there thinking about becoming an author?
Daaimah S. Poole:
I would advise any writer to write what they know and stay true to themselves.

Urban Reviews:  What one thing would you say every writer should do?
Daaimah S. Poole:
To keep writing all the time.

Urban Reviews:  Name one thing that the world doesn't know about Daaimah S. Poole-the person?
Daaimah S. Poole:
I love to read and sometimes I don’t have time for a full book, so I read celebrity and gossip blogs. I also spend a lot of money on magazines.
