Urban Reviews: Tell our readers about A Hustler's Worst Nightmare.
Derrick King: A Hustler’s Worst
Nightmare is about five sisters that pretty much
like the finer things in life and they go to any extreme to keep
that lifestyle. They are beautiful, smart and a force to be reckoned
with. Readers will be pleasantly surprised with the twists and turns
that I put into this novel and will walk away from the book knowing
what A Hustler’s Worst
Nightmare really is.
Urban Reviews: Where did the idea for this novel come from?
Derrick King: Well, it came from the top of my head, Being an avid reader I was
tired of seeing woman being used as paws whereas the men would send
them out and would reap the benefits. So there was the concept of
have these five sisters go out and so what they do.
Urban Reviews: What are your aspirations as a writer? Do you hope to one day
be signed to a mainstream publisher?
Derrick King: Right now, having my own publishing is a blessing, and I am working
hard at getting King Pen Publications off the ground so that I will
be able to sign some talented authors. Now if the numbers were right,
I would sit down and play ball with a major.
Urban Reviews: How do you feel about being a male author in an
African-American market that is mostly dominated by female writers?
Derrick King: I feel good, and I love a challenge. I respect both the males and
females in the game. I also feel that A Hustler’s Worst
Nightmare appeals to both sexes as far as readers go, so I ‘m in a
good place.
Urban Reviews: What are some of the biggest things that you've learned about
the literary industry?
Derrick King: I initially thought it would be peaches and cream but I quickly
learned there is a lot of work involved. Grassroots type work and
plenty of networking involved but I’m up for the challenge.
Urban Reviews: What's the best advice an author or someone in the literary
industry has given you?
Derrick King: No matter how many doors are closed on you don’t ever give up on
your dreams and to always believe in yourself. I wrote A Hustler’s
Worst Nightmare while serving 6 year prison term and if I would have
not been told to always believe in myself no matter what I may not
have achieved becoming a published author.
Urban Reviews: Do you have any favorite authors or books that you enjoy
reading?
Derrick King: Some of my favorite authors are Shannon Holmes, Nicolette, K’wan and
Darren Coleman and Anna J. I could go on and on. As far as my
favorite books they would have to be B-more Careful, Bad Girlz,
Street Dreams, Road Dawgz and Paper Doll.
Urban Reviews: Are you working on any upcoming projects?
Derrick King: Of course, Currently I am working on my next book entitled City Of
Brotherly Thugs which is slated for release in late 2009. It’s about
4 friends from Philadelphia that don’t have much growing up and they
decide to take the streets by storm. Things were great until the
stuff hits the fan and friendships are tested and loyalty is
questioned. I’m also open to doing collaborations if any come my
way.
Urban Reviews: What do you like to do outside of writing?
Derrick King: You can call me a rough rider
(hahahahaha). I love motorcycles. I’m
also a family man so spending time with my daughter is important.
Also watching movies and reading to stay up on my competition.
Urban Reviews: What else would you like to share with us about yourself or
your debut novel?
Derrick King: I want to thank everyone who has supported A Hustler’s Worst
Nightmare and a big shout out to Urban Reviews for posted my book to
let people know about it months before the release and the great
review you guys gave it. I’m currently on tour so watch out for me
in a city near you.
