Urban Reviews: Tell us
about In Too Deep.
Dwayne S. Joseph:
In Too Deep is a
novel about three blood brothers, Randy, Abraham, and Travis
Lincoln. They all have their own personal issues to deal
with. Randy (baby mama drama), Abe (extramarital affair
while his wife suffers daily), Travis (openly gay and
involved in a relationship with a man that is still in the
closet). While they deal with their own personal issues,
they also have to deal with their bond as a family. Randy
doesn't approve of Travis' lifestyle choice, but he is there
for him because he is his brother. Abe hates Travis and
refuses to acknowledge him as blood; and as a result, Randy
and Abe's relationship isn't as close as it could be.
Urban Reviews:
Where did you come up
with idea for this novel?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
Initially, I just
wanted to create a story about three brothers and their
struggle to remain close. Randy still had the baby mama
drama, Abe was still having an affair on his wife, but
Travis...Travis was initially a drug user, but one day I was
with my wife at her friend's house and the friend was
telling us about her brother who is homosexual, and who she
is very close to. When we left, I thought, "What greater
conflict could there be for brothers to deal with?" And so,
Travis changed from being a drug user to being gay. That
created a whole new dynamic in the story for me. It made it
a deeper novel. No pun intended.
Urban Reviews: Will
we see these characters in another book in the future?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
I won't say never, but I will say
doubtful.
Urban Reviews:
Can you tell us how
you started your literary career?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
Timing. In November of
2001 I had been laid off from work. During that time, I met
Carl Weber, and told him of a manuscript I had written. At
that time, he was just beginning his venture as a publisher.
He read my manuscript and called me three days later and let
me know that he wanted to publish it, thus my first novel
The Choices Men Make was released in September 2002.
Timing. Had I never been laid off, I would have never had
the time to meet him.
Urban Reviews:
Give us a sneak peak
at your next novel.
Dwayne S. Joseph:
My next novel is titled
Home Wrecker. It's about a woman who gets paid by
other women to ruin their marriages. It's a sexy,
suspenseful, intense novel that I am truly proud of. It's
like nothing I've done before.
Urban Reviews:
What is the biggest
thing that you've learned about the book industry? Is it all
that you hoped it would be?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
Biggest thing I've
learned...hmmm...that you have to be very patient. Every now
and then someone will shoot right out of the gate and their
career will explode. But for the majority, you really have
to work to establish your name, which means that you have to
care about the work that you are putting out, and you have
to hustle. It is all I'd hoped thus far. I'm happy.
Urban Reviews:
What advice would you
give to aspiring authors?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
Be patient and
persistent at the same time. Remember that this is a
marathon and not a sprint (famous words told to me when I
first started). Write for the love and definitely care about
your craft.
Urban Reviews: Do
you have any favorite authors or books?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
Eric Jerome Dickey, Carl Weber, Eric
Pete, La Jill Hunt, Tami Hoag, James Patterson to name a
few.
Urban Reviews:
What do you want
people to know most about you?
Dwayne S. Joseph:
I want people to know
that I truly care about the work that I put out, and that my
goal with each book is to grow as an author. Growth is
something that is very important to me. Oh yeah...hit me up
at
