Urban Reviews: Tell us
about For Every Love There's A Reason.
Kenda Bell:
For Every Love There Is A
Reason is a reality based love story that revolves
around two 30-something best friends named Keilah & Norelle
who are dealing with relationship issues. Keilah's ex comes
back with a bombshell that sends her into a tailspin and
makes her evaluates her current relationship. Then you have
busybody Norelle who can't seem to appreciate the wonderful
husband she has until a tragic mistake threatens her happy
home. The novel gets deeper in terms of how all the
relationships these two women have had dictate their current
choices and consequences while intertwining subplots twist
and turn around them, keeping the question "What would you
do it...?" in constant thought. For Every Love There Is A
Reason, in a tightly packed nutshell, is a docudrama on
paper. (smile)
Urban Reviews:
Where did you come up with the idea for this novel?
Kenda Bell: First,
I watch a lot of reality television. (smile) I am absolutely
fascinated by people and their motivations. Even though I
have been a stutterer since 5 yrs old, I have loved to talk
to people. So many people view the same situation
differently depending upon their age and circumstance, it is
intriguing. So I posed a series of "What would you do if..."
questions to my girl and guy friends and mixed their answers
with my imagination and voila. That is why my novel has so
many intertwining people and subplots...just like life for
most of us.
Urban Reviews: How
long did it take for you to complete your debut novel?
Kenda Bell: Give
or take a year. I started off with ideas in my head, then a
specific scene begins to develop. When I start saying
dialogue aloud, I am ready to get to writing. My imaginary
friend role-playing from my childhood comes in handy now.
Urban Reviews: How
did you get into the business?
Kenda Bell: I
have been writing since childhood. As I shared before, I
stuttered since age 5, so I often wrote what I felt and
thought, so writing is not new to me...being published as a
true author. I initially self-published a non fiction book
title My Soul Craves a Touch, Spirituality, Sexuality &
You in 2002. It did moderately well locally but not what
I had hoped. I was in a ministry training class so it may
have been too...clearing my throat...preachy. I took a
minute, regrouped and focused on my 1st love...fiction
writing.
Urban Reviews: Are
you working on any upcoming projects?
Kenda Bell: Well,
a sequel is definitely in the works as well as a prequel
idea I am playing around with. I have a lot of readers set
to pause, waiting to find out what happens to the host of
characters in For Every Love There Is A Reason. In
the prequel I plan to give more background on a certain
mystery man the lady readers are intrigued with in For
Every Love There Is A Reason as well as introduced a
lady from his past in the sequel who will shake things up. I
would like the readers to help me do a non-fiction version
of For Every Love There Is A Reason that will deal w/
their take on the hard choices they have made for love. We
all have; you know what I mean?
Urban Reviews: Have
you faced any challenges as a new author?
Kenda Bell: Well,
getting out there is intimidating but we have to keep
pushing. Personally, I have dealt with challenge all my
life. Beginning with simply speaking with confidence to
being the best single mom I can be in a hard world so every
thing that follows is the part of process I really don't
like. (smile) No, patience is my biggest challenge as a new
author...everything takes time whether I like it or not. I
have to win my readers over, so hopefully as the book
continues to circulate, I will get the success that all
authors desire.
Urban Reviews: How
did it feel when you first held a copy of your book in your
hands?
Kenda Bell: I
felt like I was holding my son for the first time all over
again. I look at the finished work, cooed over it, counted
all the pages, marveled at it beauty...then I gasped in
fear...what do I do now. Anxiety wanted to tag along but I
said naw, perseverance and faith got my back.
Urban Reviews: Name
one thing that the world does not know about Kenda Bell- the
person?
Kenda Bell: Even
though I stutter, when I do other voices/acting I do not
stutter.... My acting skills are like that...go figure. I
will put on a wig and play Keilah if they cast DB Woodside
for Andre in the movie. Oh, I am a lil' crazy too...in a
non-scary way of course. |
