Urban Reviews: Tell us about your debut novel Cut Throat.
K. Roland Williams: Cut Throat is my first
born. It's the story of a good guy (Quincy Underwood) who gets
caught up trying to do the one thing that he loves the most-sing. He
is taunted by a seductress that offers to give him his dream which
is a real record contract but his boss and manager of the night-club
where he and his band Taboo performs, will not allow him to leave.
If Quincy leaves then the inflow of legal money will leave with him
and Raymond the club owner, drug dealer, and all around bad guy will
not allow that even if it means taking Quincy out of the picture.
The story picks up from there and takes the reader on a ride through
DC with the cops, and drug dealers on Q’s trail, and a dangerous
love triangle that could also end it all for Q.
Urban Reviews: Where did you come up with the idea for this book?
K. Roland Williams: This story is
loosely based on my life when I was in the music industry and
singing in a night club.
Urban Reviews: What was the hardest part of writing your book?
K. Roland Williams: The hardest part
was reliving the parts of the novel that were real. I had to dive
into my memory and bring up some negative stuff. But I got it done.
Urban Reviews: What made you want to become an author?
K. Roland Williams: I knew for many years
that I had several stories and characters inside of me that have
been trying to get out. I decided to challenge myself and see if I
could allow that creative part of me to be expressed. Cut Throat was
born from me disciplining myself and finishing the project that I
started.
Urban Reviews: Describe the day when you found out about your book deal.
K. Roland Williams: I was
at work when I got the call. TCP wanted to know if I had already
signed a deal with another publishing house. I was like, hell no (to
myself) I hadn’t even talked to any other publishing house. Mia (the
VP) asked me if I would be interested in coming into the Triple Crown
family and the rest was history.
Urban Reviews: What do you feel is the most challenging part about being a new
author?
K. Roland Williams: Rejection. When you work in the world of creativity,
everyone is not going to agree with your vision. I have had a few
reviews that were less than positive, but that’s a part of the
process. You just can’t please everyone all the time and a new
author has to understand that.
Urban Reviews: What do you think about the countless number of books coming out
on the AA Fiction market these days?
K. Roland Williams: It’s definitely getting more
saturated with new authors everyday. I believe that there is enough
room for all authors out here in the genre’. The truth is, the cream
will rise to the top and the authors with the most talent will be
the ones standing at the end when the smoke clears.
Urban Reviews: What author or book do you feel influenced you to want to become
an author yourself?
K. Roland Williams: The authors in the street lit genre that
influenced me were Iceberg Slim, Donald Goines, and the Pittsburgh
playwright August Wilson.
Urban Reviews: What can we look forward to in the future from K. Roland
Williams?
K. Roland Williams: My next novel is called Natural Born Gangster. It’s the
story of a drug king pin (Odessa Burroughs) that is under
investigation by the metro DC drug task force. He ends up hiring
his ex fiancée as his attorney and as they start to spend more time
together working on his case, they start to have feelings again for
one another. She is married to a cop, and there is a lot of drama
and excitement in this book. I don't want to give too much up.
Urban Reviews: Is there anything else you'd like to share about yourself or
your book?
K. Roland Williams: Cut Throat is a fresh approach to the street lit genre'.
Pick it up at all of the stores, if they don’t have it in order it,
you wont be disappointed. Check me out at
