Urban Reviews: Start by
telling our readers about Freak in the Sheets.
MadameK: Freak
in the Sheets has so many elements. I tried to give a
little bit of comedy, a little bit of sex, and a little bit
of street. I've been told it's a fast read.
Urban Reviews:
Where did you come up with the idea for this novel?
MadameK: I
wondered for a long time if there existed a freak school;
somewhere people could go and learn the ins and outs of
pleasing each other. I didn't hear of any until I was almost
done writing the book. Come to find out there's a similar
place right here in NYC!
Urban Reviews: How
did you start your literary career?
MadameK: I used
to start short stories, but due to the pressures of my job
and just life in general, I never got around to writing
them. I think I have somewhere like twenty one-page story
openers. Then one day, I just woke up and said, "I'm gonna
finish this."
Urban Reviews: Do
you have any upcoming projects?
MadameK: Yes, I
am currently working on my second novel, Freak of the
Week. It's due out in December 2008. I'm also working on
some other things under a different name.
Urban Reviews: What
have you learned about the book industry so far? Is what you
expected it to be?
MadameK: I've
been amazed at how much haterade is being drunk in the
literary industry. I guess haters are everywhere you go, but
it seems like if an author/company reaches a certain level
of success, the haters come-a-knockin'. You can't really do
anything about it though; just do like my girl Jill Scott
and "do me".
Overall, though, the fans have been great. I've been
overwhelmed by the love total strangers have shown me. It
makes it so worth it!
Urban Reviews: Do
you have any favorite authors or books?
MadameK: I like a
lot of different books, but I love mystery, chick-lit,
biographies, and street fiction. I like K'wan, Laurinda
Brown, Tananarive Due, and Octavia Butler, among countless
others.
Urban Reviews: Name
one thing that the world does not know about MadameK - the
person?
MadameK: I think
if you saw me on the street, you'd be shocked to know I
wrote that book. LOL
