Urban Reviews: Tell us more
about First Crush.
Marcia King-Gamble:
First Crush is a play on words. It means
the first grapes harvested in a season. First Crush is
set in Washington wine country. It's a story of a man who has
his priorities somewhat screwed up. He chooses his business
over his relationship. My heroine is not about to back off and
let him walk away. She has an interest in that business and in
him. Sound familiar?
Urban Reviews: Where did
the concept behind this novel come from?
Marcia King-Gamble:
I was talking to my editor about housing
swapping. Two years ago I house swapped. A wonderful man from
Washington State moved into my house and I moved into his in
Seattle. She said what a wonderful idea for a book, why don't
you write about it. And I did.
Urban Reviews: What was
your biggest challenge when it came to writing any of your
novels?
Marcia King-Gamble:
Probably making the time to write. The ideas
are always there but it requires discipline to make yourself
sit when others are out playing.
Urban Reviews: What are
your expectations when it comes to your career as an author?
Marcia King-Gamble:
I am just grateful to be able to indulge in my
passion and to tell the stories that are in my head. My
readers make that possible.
Urban Reviews: Have you
ever considered doing any writing outside of Romance?
Marcia King-Gamble:
I already do. I do some technical writing for
business and I have written mainstream books. A self help book
is something I have considered.
Urban Reviews: Looking
back, what is one thing you would have done differently in
regards to your writing journey?
Marcia King-Gamble:
I've been so busy writing books that at times
I've gotten complacent about self promotion. Writers need to
keep promoting so that their names remain out there. It's a
case of out of sight and out of mind.
Urban Reviews: What
projects are you working on for the future? When can we
expect it to be released?
Marcia King-Gamble:
I am working on two mainstream novels.
Publication dates to be determined.
Urban Reviews: Who has
been your biggest inspiration in the book industry and why?
Marcia King-Gamble:
My agent (my third actually) used to be a
senior editor for one of the majors. It's nice to work with
someone who has two perspectives. She's professional and
motivational and keeps me inspired. It's not good enough to be
just a decent writer these days as the bottom line is sales.
If you have a fragile ego you have to get over it. Not
everyone is going to like your writing. You just have to keep
focused and continue writing stories from the heart.
Urban Reviews: Do you
think Romance gets the respect it deserves? (Why or why not?)
Marcia King-Gamble:
I think today's romance novels echo reality.
Many people are still of the impression that these are light
books with little substance. At times readers will comment "I
don't read those books," yet they read Nicholas Sparks. I
encourage those who are still skeptical to pick up a copy of a
current romance novels. We've come a long way baby.
