with Maryann Reid

Maryann Reid

In 2002, Maryann Reid was invited by USA TODAY to write a novella for the acclaimed Open Book section of their website. In Jan/Feb, her series, "Single Black Female" ran for several weeks and attracted a whole new audience to her already popular first book, Sex and the Single Sister. In 2003, Reid wrote Use Me or Lose Me, a spin off to Sex and the Single Sister and published by St. Martins.

A woman, always exploring her options, Reid obtained her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Miami in May 2004. She is a regular guest and relationship advisor on radio and television shows.

Her third book Marry Your Baby Daddy was published in September 2005 and sparked the creation of Marry Your Baby Daddy Day.  Mrs. Big followed in 2006, and her latest title Every Man For Herself was published by St. Martin's Press in August 2007.

Urban Reviews: Tell us about Every Man For Herself.
Maryann Reid:
Every Man For Herself is about a woman who is in love with three men, and these three men love her back. What's a girl to do? So many of us wish we had that problem. But everything is not as nice as it seems.

Urban Reviews: Where did you come up with the idea for this story?
Maryann Reid:  I have always been intrigued by women who are able to capture and hold the attention of men without having to compromise who they are and what they do to get that attention. They just are who they are, as pretty or even as ugly as they want to be.

Urban Reviews: Can you give us a glimpse of your next novel?
Maryann Reid:  My next novel is about a single mom who falls for her daughter's man with a twist.

Urban Reviews: Please tell our readers how you started your literary career.
Maryann Reid:  I sort of fell into everything. I never thought I'd be publishing books. I just had an idea and kind of put it in the right hands at the right time. I wish I had that story of selling and shopping my work early on, but as it is in most of my life, I usually find myself skipping over many steps to get to that certain place, the challenge is in staying there.

Urban Reviews: You also created Marry Your Baby Daddy Day that was inspired by your previous novel. Can you tell us more about this?
Maryann Reid:  Marry Your Baby Daddy Day is an all expenses paid wedding of 10 couples with children who are ready for that next step in their relationship. I started it after finding out during research for my book Marry Your Baby Daddy that 70% of children are born to single or unmarried black
women. I was astonished. I knew I wanted to come up with a way to bring black love back in style.

Urban Reviews: Who are some of your favorite authors or books?
Maryann Reid:  I like Jamaica Kincaid for her repetitious style.

Urban Reviews: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Maryann Reid:  Leave the outline alone, don't put yourself on a writing schedule, and tape a $100,000 advance check from your soon to be publisher on your bathroom mirror for inspiration.

Urban Reviews: Name one thing that the world does not know about Maryann Reid-the person?
Maryann Reid:  I'm a virgin. (wink)
