Urban Reviews: Give us
a brief synopsis of your debut novel Secret Society and of your newest
novel Diary of a Mistress.
Miasha: Secret Society is about two of the flyest,
most beautiful girls you could meet who hustle men for money and
material possessions. But the twist is they have a devastating secret
and once it's revealed all hell breaks lose. Diary of a Mistress
is about a happily married couple who just celebrated their tenth
wedding anniversary in Marco Island and when they return home the wife,
Monica, receives the diary of her husband's mistress in the mail. As she
reads the details of a steamy long-term affair she is faced with heavy
decisions and even heavier consequences.
Urban Reviews: Where did you come up with
idea for these novels?
Miasha: Secret Society was a story I wanted to
tell to show the mentality of many women that believe the only way to
financial security is through getting a man with money, but I also
wanted to show that there are consequences when attaining "the life" in
that way. When I wrote the consequences on the first page, they were
severe and I had to ask myself what would really make a man want to kill
a woman. That is when the idea of the secret came into play. With
Diary of a Mistress, I wanted to break the cliché that all men are
dogs. I wanted to tell the other side of the story. There are good men
out there, but for every good man there is about ten women trying to get
him, even if he is taken. I've experienced this in my own relationship
and my trust was often tested, so the idea for this novel pretty much
derived from some personal situations. !
Urban Reviews: How did you get into the
business? Any rejection letters?
Miasha: Fortunately, I didn't receive any rejection
letters. I sent the manuscript to Teri Woods Publishing was offered a
deal right away. In fact, Teri wanted to buy my book outright and I was
unsure if I wanted to do that so I consulted author, Karen E. Quinones
Miller. Karen suggested I get an agent, she put me in touch with her own
and in a matter of a weekend, Secret Society and Diary of a Mistress were
being bid on by three major publishing houses in New York.
Urban Reviews: Have you faced any challenges
as a fairly new author?
Miasha: I have to say I haven't. People said it would be
hard to get published as a first-time author who hadn't self-published,
but that wasn't the case for me. People also said that the editing
process would be stressful, but I found it very helpful instead. And
lastly, people said that the hardest part was not writing the book but
marketing and selling it, but I have been successful at both. I am
definitely blessed as every step thus far has been challenge-free, even
though I've heard stories that suggest otherwise. I just pray the
blessings continue.
Urban Reviews: Currently on your website you
have a documentary about yourself that you produced. Do you plan on
producing more short films in the future?
Miasha: Most certainly. I originally enrolled in Temple
University with the intentions of becoming a filmmaker. That passion has
not gone away. I want to produce TV shows, movies, more documentaries
and so on.
Urban Reviews: What are you working on now?
Miasha: A number of things. I am preparing a tour for
Diary of a Mistress. I am also editing my third novel Motherly
Love due out July 2007. In addition, I am in talks to turn Secret
Society into a play and producing a reality show. I'm even getting
into real-estate investing, which is going very well. I have a lot on my
plate and a lot more that I am considering. So you'll be hearing much
from me.
Urban Reviews: What have you learned about
the book industry so far?
Miasha: It is similar to the music industry. It is a
hustle, whether you are signed or not and it is expanding in directions
that are unimaginable. I am happy to be in it, especially right now.
Urban Reviews: What advice would you give to
someone who wants to jump into the business?
Miasha: Do your homework. Research the business and get
started. Go to any and all literary events you can and network.
Constantly be seen and heard.
Urban Reviews: Who are some of your favorite
authors or books?
Miasha: Maya Angelou, Omar Tyree, Karen E. Quinones
Miller, Daaimah S. Poole, Nikki Turner, E. Lynn Harris, etc., etc., etc.
My favorite books include Flyy Girl, True to the Game,
The Coldest Winter Ever, Secret Society, and Diary of a
Mistress just to name a few, but there are many.
Urban Reviews: What do you want the world to
know most about you?
Miasha: That I am truly blessed. I came a long way and
want nothing more than to motivate, strengthen, and inspire others.
