Valentine
Born & raised in New York City, Michelle Valentine has
been a part of the entertainment industry most of her
life. As the only child of a single mother also in the
business, Michelle spent much of her childhood in
recording & rehearsal studios studying tap, jazz, ballet,
hip-hop & modern dance, as well as fencing, acting, piano,
& music theory. At the tender age of 3, Michelle became a
regular on Sesame Street. As an adolescent, she won
numerous pageants and also began modeling and doing
television commercials. During high school Michelle
continued her pursuit by participating in all productions
both on the stage and behind the scenes.
Michelle graduated Cum Laude from Marymount College where
she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech, Drama, &
Communications, while minoring in Marketing & Creative
Writing. As a writer, she has freelanced for several
magazines, contributing stories on artists like the
legendary Chuck D and the multi-platinum selling Destiny’s
Child. As she cultivated her writing style, she began
writing songs while also referencing, doing backgrounds
and ghost vocaling for several artists. Beating out 100s
of hopefuls, Michelle was chosen to help revive the group
The Covergirls with her lead and background vocals.
Although the group was already in existence prior to her
arrival, Michelle gave the group new life as the new lead
vocalist, helping them secure a recording deal with Sony’s
Epic Records. With Michelle’s sultry rendition of the R&B
classic “Wishing On A Star”, the group had a top 5 hit on
Billboard and won a New York Music Award.
Having limitless aspirations, Michelle also co-hosted a
nationally syndicated radio show called “The Coast to
Coast Hip Hop Count Down”, where she conducted numerous
on-air interviews with some of today’s hottest artists
alongside the infamous "Uncle" Ralph McDaniels. She
embarked on her career as an author and has recently
completed her second novel (A Girl’s Gotta Eat, scheduled
for release in October, 2007 by St. Martin’s Press) while
her 1st book, entitled Nyagra’s Falls, published by Simon
& Schuster, is currently in stores. She also co-authored
the fictionalized autobiographical Insatiable – The Rise
of a Porn Star, with adult film superstar, Heather Hunter.

Urban Reviews: Start by
telling our readers about A Girl's Gotta Eat.
Michelle
Valentine: A
Girl's Gotta Eat is about a pretty young girl from New
York named Rementa Broughton who comes from very humble
beginnings and a tragic past but who is determined to make
it in the ultra-male dominated chauvinistic world of
Hollywood. She eventually takes LA by storm after starring
in several music videos but some of her methods are quite
unorthodox and unscrupulous. Although she's talented, she
definitely knows how to use what she's got to get what she
wants - but she also leaves a trails of deception in her
path as she rises up the ladder of success. So, as Murphy's
Law would have it, anything that can go wrong, pretty much
does.
Urban Reviews: What
inspired you to create this storyline?
Michelle Valentine:
I'm not entirely sure. With this
story, my creative juices were just flowing. While some of
the storyline is true - much of it is embellished - but I do
know of a lot of scenarios that females go through when
they're trying to make it in the entertainment business -
whether it be music, acting, modeling or whatever. We go
through a lot as women and if you're not careful, you can
definitely get chewed up and spit out. But Remmi is a tough
cookie, so she rolls with the punches - sometimes literally.
Urban Reviews: You
recently co-authored Insatiable with Heather Hunter.
What led you to pen your own debut novel?
Michelle Valentine:
A Girl's Gotta Eat is actually
not my debut novel. If you count Insatiable, it's my
3rd. My debut novel is called Nyagra's Falls and it
was published in 2002 by Strebor Books/Simon & Schuster,
which is Zane's imprint. Ever since I was a child, I was
into writing. I've written short stories, poetry, and even
songs. I used to be in a singing group called The CoverGirls
and I wrote the title cut for our CD. So I've been writing a
long time.
Urban Reviews:
Please tell us about any upcoming projects that you are
working on.
Michelle Valentine:
I'm working on book #4 while
simultaneously penning an urban teen series. I have a sitcom
and a screenplay that I am shopping and I've recently
created my own company called The Epitome Group, LLC which
is an independent publishing house as well as an agency that
represents other authors.
Urban Reviews: What
have you learned about the book industry being a relatively
new author?
Michelle Valentine:
I've learned that major publishing
houses really only put your book on the shelves and that the
author is basically responsible for everything else - from
publicity to marketing - to sometimes even making sure that
the book is in certain stores.
Urban Reviews: What
advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Michelle Valentine:
Be ready to work hard & hustle. Having
your book published is really only the 1st step to success.
Urban Reviews: Any
favorite authors or books?
Michelle Valentine:
I love the work of Alisa
Valdes-Rodriguez, Brandon Massey and Eric Jerome Dickey. But
I have far too many books that I love to name them all.
Urban Reviews: Name
one thing that the would does not know about Michelle
Valentine-the person?
Michelle Valentine:
Michelle Valentine is a writer, a
perfectionist, a persona, and a business. On my own time -
when I'm with my family and those that know and love me - I
am a different person - a real person - a very settled, down
to earth, stable, hands on single mom - who doesn't even go
by the same name. ~LOL~ |
