 Inside Out
with Monchel Rice

Monchel Rice

If anybody can prove that being from the hood doesn’t stop your dreams, it’s definitely Monchel Rice. Growing up in the hardest and cruelest streets of Baltimore City, Monchel is all too familiar with the tuff times in life that everybody can relate to. By age eleven, Monchel decided it was wiser to write down whatever she felt to keep her out of trouble. Her feelings on paper turned into poems, short stories, and music. After getting so much feed back from family, friends, and strangers that her material was out of this world. It wouldn't be long before she had easily begun five different novels with just as much drama and static as any other urban tale. Being a good writer is something that can easily be possessed, but being a strong and great writer is a gift that you must work hard to keep and hands down with no questions asked this chick has it.

Urban Reviews:  Tell our readers about Charge it 2 The Game.
Monchel Rice:
Well, Charge it 2 Da Game is about two rival men who were once best friends. Reno is the greedy friend who wants to be the only top boss in the drug game. His former best friend Julius is now on top and running the whole West side Of Baltimore City, so it's impossible for him. Julius on the other hand never wanted the drug life and still doesn't He likes the quiet life. Reno being the stingy man he is decides to set Julius up once and for all by forcing his distressed lover and the mother of his son Diamond into occupying Julius's mind with her seductive ways. Diamond doesn't agree with Reno's decisions but has no choice when the option of never seeing her baby again comes up. Now that Reno's plan is under works he can quietly steal all of Julius's customers and connects but, Diamond somehow manages to turn the whole plot upside down.

Urban Reviews:  Where did the inspiration for this novel come from?
Monchel Rice:
Baltimore is notoriously known for the drug life. Though, I have been blessed to never want to go that route, I am still fully aware about the life style it brings because of similar things that has happened around me growing up. So I would definitely say my life inspired it.

Urban Reviews:  What made you want to try your hand at writing?
Monchel Rice:
I have always loved to write. Reading and English were my best two subjects in school. I used to write songs because I liked to sing. I would sit and write poems when I was feeling something that I really couldn't express to people. So, it's always been a very great hobby for me.

Urban Reviews:  What are your goals as a writer? Do you see yourself doing this long term?
Monchel Rice:
I am surely in this for the long haul. I don't like to start things and not finish especially if I am so passionate about it. I want to create material that my readers can relate to. I want them to feel some kind of familiar-ism to my books. Also in the process of becoming a write that people learn to love I want to be a role model for anybody who thinks that because you were dealt a bad hand in life that it's impossible to flip that and make it a royal flush because anything is possible.

Urban Reviews:  What has been the best advice you've gotten so far from another author in the business?
Monchel Rice:
I received a comment from Allison Hobbs actually, and she told me that no matter what, keep working hard and in due time what I always wanted I'll get. It meant a lot to me because during this time that I am trying to make a name for myself, I don't always receive what I expect and sometimes I get a little discouraged but I have a strong Mom who stays on my case so I'll never quit.

Urban Reviews:  If you could change one or more things relating to your book, what would it be?
Monchel Rice:
Well, a year ago I would have said the fact that I had to self publish but, in the end I guess it kind of pays off because it shows that I did this on my own. I struggled with getting this published being shot down time after time when I knew my material was good enough for the big league. Though it may be a little ruff around the edges it still is mine. It symbolizes my hard work and perseverance. So, today that answer would be nothing.

Urban Reviews:  Do you have any ideas or planned releases for the future?
Monchel Rice:
Yes, I am currently working on my next book called Mafia Princess which I give you a sneak peak of in the back of my current book. Also, I am working on the sequel to Charge it 2 Da Game called Double Or Nothing and this one will be even more eyebrow raising.

Urban Reviews:  Do you have any favorite authors or books?
Monchel Rice:
Zane hands down with out a doubt is my favorite author ever! I don't even need time to think about that. My favorite book right now would be Let's Talk About Pep by Sandy Denton. I love how she let us in to her life so we could understand her more.

Urban Reviews:  What are your thoughts on the book industry as a whole?
Monchel Rice:
Right now it's pretty tight. I think more companies should be more open to different walks of life and not just want a certain genre. There are so many talented author out here that get looked over daily.

Urban Reviews:  Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your novel?
Monchel Rice:
Well, I am genuinely a shy person so at first the thought of actually making my material public was not an option but I am slowly coming along. Also my book is an awesome book and I know that whoever picks it up will not put it down until you finish the very last page. I know this because it's very hard to keep my attention when reading a book unless it's a good one so I wouldn't ever give my readers anything that couldn't hold my attention first. And if my mom, who NEVER reads, actually read the whole thing in one day, I know it's that good lol.
