Urban Reviews: Start by
telling our readers about Doing His Time.
Nichelle Walker:
Doing His Time is a hood tale about a young
girl name Emerald who wanted to live the glamorous life. She finds that in
Dollar, one of Chicago biggest players. Dollar quickly upgrades Emerald
into his wifey, crowning her the hottest chick in the game. Emerald moved
so fast and got so caught up into never having to want for anything. She
let Dollar blindside her and started making poor judgment calls. She was
his ride-or-die chick willing to do anything to stay at the top spot. But
she quickly finds out everything ain't all peaches and cream at the top
spot.
Urban Reviews: Where did you
come up with the idea for this novel?
Nichelle Walker:
I was right in the middle of another novel I was
writing at the time and the idea smacked me in the face. I was getting out
of school for a break so I stopped my other novel and put it to the side.
I started Doing His Time and was done three weeks later. I always
have ideas just come to me out of no where.
Urban Reviews: Will there be a
sequel?
Nichelle Walker:
Yes, Emerald has unfinished business to handle.
Urban Reviews: Explain to our
readers how you got into the business.
Nichelle Walker:
Well I've been trying to break into this business
since 1999, so this was not a overnight process for me. I just kept
hustling. I started off writing screenplays. I put that to the side
and tried my hand with a novel. But I will be getting back into my
screenplays (I have over six done already). I self published my book
myself, and I've been working hard ever since.
Urban Reviews: Can you give us a
sneak peak at your next novel ?
Nichelle Walker:
I give all my readers a sneak peak in the back of
Doing His Time so go pick up the book and see what's in store for
M.O.N.
Stay tuned cause the saga continues and M.O.N. will definitely
'Keep Them Pages Turning.'
Urban Reviews: What challenges have
you faced being a new author?
Nichelle Walker:
Wow it's been many for me, one is having patience
when my book dropped I wanted it to be a best seller overnight. But
nothing happens overnight and it takes time, especially when you're a new
author like me. Time management has also been one of my biggest issues
also. I have a problem with that and I'm working on it because you need to
be very organized. It's a lot of being on-the-go in this industry, and I
work a full-time job so I'm learning how to balance things. And one of the
biggest challenges is making sure your business is being handled properly.
Following up with people is very important.
Urban Reviews: Have you gotten any
sound advice from fellow authors?
Nichelle Walker:
Yes I was very blessed to find good genuine people
in this industry. My publicist Torrian Ferguson was very helpful to me, I
was clueless and he helped me map out the ropes. J.M. Benjamin the author
of Down In The Dirty and My Manz and Em, has been very
helpful and supportive as well, Nishawnda Ellis, Nyema Taylor just to name
a few.
Urban Reviews: Was there anyone that
inspired you to want to become a writer?
Nichelle Walker:
Yes, there have been so many wonderful writers that
inspired me like Terry McMillan and Bebe Moore Campbell just to name a few.
Urban Reviews: What do you want
people to know most about you?
Nichelle Walker:
That I'm a very laid back easy going person that
likes to have fun. And I also want to let everyone know that I have a new
clothing line that will be hitting the stores next year called Icey. Make
sure to look out for it. |
