Urban Reviews: Tell us about Love and
Consequences? Nyema Taylor: Love & Consequences is about a young lady named Skyyzae who believes she hit the jackpot after falling for a soon to be wealthy man. She gets caught up in living that glamorous life and labels him as her meal ticket out the hood until her manipulative ex-boyfriend resurfaces and makes both their lives a living hell. Not comfortable with rejection, Slim gives her the option to either come back to him or suffer whatever consequences are to follow. Tired of the physical and mental abuse he used to lay on her day after day, she refuses to let him have his way. But at the same time is defying him worth the headache? I’ll let you read the book to find out the answer. Urban Reviews: Where did you come up with the idea for this novel? Nyema Taylor: My life inspired me to write Love & Consequences. After living through a similar situation in the past and beating the odds, I found it to be more soothing to express myself on paper. Although I got very creative with my characters, each one of them reminds me a little of myself. Everything that goes down in this particular story doesn’t pertain to me, but I’m sure it does to somebody. I just want my sistah’s to know there is a way out of everything, you just have to stay focused, keep your head up and believe. Urban Reviews: How did you get into the business? Nyema Taylor: I’ve been reading and writing poetry since middle school. My mother had me on the read at least one book a week routine growing up. But it wasn’t until my cousin Monique, author of A Sista’ Amongst Soldiers & A Perfect Nightmare, propositioned me to write a book with her that I really considered seeing my work in print. After contemplating all I’d been through I knew I had a story to tell. I sat back, did some research and reached out to a few different authors for advice. It wasn’t until after I put in an order for my first print that three deals from small independent companies were offered to me. After putting deep thought into my decision, I declined, moved forward with my print and the rest is history. Urban Reviews: Can you give us a sneak peak at your next novel Deceitful Obsession? Nyema Taylor: My sophomore novel, Deceitful Obsession, is about a young successful businessman that has it all. Kassim has the money, the looks, a beautiful wife and a loving daughter by his side. His only weakness is defining the word commitment. After meeting Sherae, an out-of-state model, he thinks he can have his cake and eat it too. But, when his mistress falls more deeply than he anticipates, total chaos erupts in their world. With an obsessed mistress and a fed up wife set on revenge, you have to read the book to find out exactly how he plays his hand. ~smile~ Urban Reviews: What challenges have you faced being a new author? Nyema Taylor: Oh boy…It hasn’t been an easy task at all. After getting rejection after rejection from agents, I had to decide if this was really for me. My biggest challenges came when I had to put up the money and get out there to hustle hustle hustle. I love to meet and greet my supporters, but sometimes it takes more energy than others. I have to give my audience what they ask for whatever that may be. So striving to satisfy is definitely a challenge. At the end of the day, the fact remains that writing is my passion and I love what I do. Urban Reviews: Have you gotten any sound advice from fellow authors? Nyema Taylor: Definitely! One must know that when working in this industry you can’t do it all on your own. It’s okay to reach out for help sometimes. A few different people have been looking out for me. In particular I have to mention my friend, J.M. Benjamin (author of Down In The Dirty & My Manz And ‘Em), Paula Edwards (author of The Last Bad Decision), Antoine McAdoo (author of Scandalous Intentions) and K'wan (author of Hoodlum & Street Dreams) Urban Reviews: Who are some of your favorite authors or books? Nyema Taylor: I have to say I’m a big fan of Alice Walker and Donald Goines. If you bring things up to date just to name a few Teri Woods, Nikki Turner, K'wan, J.M. Benjamin, and the list goes on. I’m very versatile when it comes to reading. Urban Reviews: Name one thing that the world does not know about Nyema Taylor - the person? Nyema Taylor: I must say I’m a very quiet and shy person. If we’re ever in the same room together and I look a bit antisocial, please don’t take offense because that’s me around crowds. Listening is my thing. I like to sit back and observe. But, I’m very cool, laid-back and down-to-earth if you get to know me. Oh, I can’t forget silly because being serious all the time is not for me. (LOL) Some find this hard to believe because of my career, but I just get out there and do what I gotta do when the time comes. |
