Urban Reviews: Tell our
readers about Like Night & Day.
Renita M. Walker: Like Night & Day
is about a female from Detroit named Goldie who lives a lavish
life by dabbling in the drug trade. She meets and falls for a
D-boy from Detroit whose personality is "like night & day" and
when she decides that she no longer wants to be with him it
ends up being easier said than done.
Urban Reviews: How did
you come up with the idea for this book?
Renita M. Walker: I wanted to write a
story about my life initially, but once I got started the
characters kind of took over. I'll be honest... about 75% of
the book is based on actual events.
Urban Reviews: When did
you know you wanted to be a writer?
Renita M. Walker: As a child I knew I
wanted to be a writer. I started off writing poems and raps.
After reading B-More Careful and Dutch I knew
then that Urban Fiction was what I wanted to write. I didn't
start writing books until 2005 though.
Urban Reviews: Looking
back, is there anything you would have done differently in
regards to your debut novel?
Renita M. Walker: No, I think everything
happens for reason, so I take life as it comes. Everything I
went through to get Like Night & Day out made me a much
stronger person. I welcome the struggle because I know it will
make me a stronger woman.
Urban Reviews: What are
your ultimate goals as a writer?
Renita M. Walker: My ultimate goals as a
writer is to keep writing books that the readers can
appreciate. Of course I'd love to make the New York Times and
Essence Bestsellers lists, maybe even win an award one day,
but I think it's more important to satisfy the readers.
Urban Reviews: What's the
best literary advice you've gotten from another author so far?
Renita M. Walker: Do your research. You
can't expect someone to just tell you everything you need to
know. You have to put in work if it's what you really want.
Also, to market Renita M. Walker as a brand to gain the
reader's trust and they will follow your work loyaly..
Urban Reviews: Do you
have any upcoming projects that we can look forward to?
Renita M. Walker: Yes. What's Done in
the Dark, which is part two to Like Night & Day,
was just released on July 18th at the Harlem Book Fair.. I'm
also working on Murder Mitten which was previewed in
the book of short stories entitled Bitch I'm From the D.
I have several other projects I'm working on, but I'm keeping
those under wraps for now.
Urban Reviews: Do you
have any favorite authors or books?
Renita M. Walker: Wow! I have too many to
name them all, but some of them are Ms. Michel Moore, K-Wan,
Nikki Turner, Kwame Teague, Wahida Clark, Dashawn Taylor, Leo
Sullivan and Victor L. Martin.
Urban Reviews: What do
you like to do outside of writing?
Renita M. Walker: Finally! My favorite
question :) I love to cook and bake. I sell baked goods here
in Detroit and I'm in the process of opening up a bakery named
Goldie's Goodies. I also love to travel and shop, but my
favorite hobby of them all is reading of course. My imprint
publishing company, Rocky D Publishing, is keeping me very
busy as well.
Urban Reviews: Is there
anything else you would like to share about yourself or your
novel?
Renita M. Walker: Yes, I'm new to the
literary field and it is my goal to stay drama free and carry
myself in a manner that only good things can be said about me.
I support everybody in this business from the graphic artist
(shout out to Keith of Marion Designs) to the printers and
editors. I know how hard this business is and I wish everyone
in it the best!
