San Culberson San Culberson was born in Center, Texas near Lubbock and Possum Trot, but she grew up in Dallas and in Houston. She has a degree in psychology and has been a training coordinator for a foster care and adoption agency for a long time. She is married and has three sons. In my spare time San likes to write novels, write poetry, read, complain, laugh, eat good food, shop, watch Oprah, exercise sporadically, put her sons to bed, make plans and then cancel them, antagonize her husband, and sleep. One of her truest desires is for you to buy The Nick of Time,
read it, love it, tell twenty friends about it and then they'll read it,
love it, tell twenty friends about it, and so on and so on… |

Urban Reviews: Start by telling our
readers what The Nick of Time is all about.
San Culberson: The Nick of
Time is a story about a woman (Fiona Daniels) who decides to divorce
her husband after discovering he’s cheating on her. She announces that
she’s a DFL (divorcee for life) and that she will never again try to
have a meaningful relationship with a man…and then she meets Nick.
Urban Reviews: The Nick of Time
starts out by the main character Fiona having a party
celebrating her divorce. What made you decide to start the story this
way?
San Culberson: The divorce party takes place in the first few chapters in the book because I wanted to let the readers know immediately what type of woman Fiona is. She is a take charge, take no prisoners, make lemonade when life gives you lemons kind of woman.
Urban Reviews: What inspired you to write
this particular story?
San Culberson: I wrote this
novel at a time when several marriages around me (including my own)
were ending or in serious trouble. I posed the question what would
happen if a woman were determined to make the best of her
circumstances no matter what they were. Of course Fiona is not perfect
and she’s a little crazy, but aren’t we all?
Urban Reviews: How did you get into the
business?
San Culberson: I’ve been a
writer since I was a girl (poetry, short stories, the bathroom wall…)
so I always knew I wanted to call myself an author someday. I wrote a
book, found an agent, who then found a publisher for The Nick of Time
and here we are.
Urban Reviews: Do you have any upcoming
projects in the works?
San Culberson: My second
book will be published by Dafina in December ’07 and I’m working on a
third novel. I would like to try my hand at writing for a younger
audience and I would also like to publish a volume of poetry.
Urban Reviews: What have you learned about
the book industry so far? Is it all that you hoped it would be?
San Culberson: I have
learned that your writing won’t standout from the pack unless you make
it stand out. Being a successful writer sometimes has more to do with
marketing than having a consistently good product.
Urban Reviews: Who are some of your
favorite authors or books?
San Culberson: I would
encourage everyone to read The Good Earth, Jubilee, and In Search of
Satisfaction. Over the years, I have really enjoyed Alice Walker…I
would say that she’s my favorite author. I have also enjoyed Eric
Jerome Dickey, Mary Monroe, Wally Lamb, and Terry McMillian. There are
dozens of authors that I admire.
Urban Reviews: How do you balance your
writing career with your everyday life?(i.e. day job, family)
San Culberson: I work full
time and I also fill in sometimes at my husband’s restaurant. I have
three boys 12, 7, and 4 who keep me very busy. Honestly, I don’t think
I do a very good job of balancing because I feel rushed most of the
time…but everything does get done.
Urban Reviews: How did you feel when you
held the first copy of your novel in your hands?
San Culberson: Having the
book in my hand was nice, but having a total stranger contact me and
tell me how much they enjoyed the book was and continues to be very
rewarding.
Urban Reviews: Anything else you would
like to add about yourself or your novel?
San Culberson: I want everyone who enjoys a contemporary, sexy (the book is a little sexy), funny story to go out and get the book. And when they’re I want them to tell me what they think and spread the word. |
