Urban Reviews: Tell our
readers about What's Done In Darkness.
Shaun L. Green: If the bond between a
mother and daughter withstand some of the toughest life
lessons in love and forgiveness?
An unplanned pregnancy.
An unbearable betrayal.
Unimaginable temptation.
Jacqueline Moore is ambitious and focused on success as a
fashion boutique entrepreneur. The opening of her second
urban-gear boutique brings realization to her dreams. However
her daughter’s odd behavior and their growing rift causes her
to re-focus and investigate. What she discovers catapults her
into reliving her own struggles as a teenage mother. She
begins a relentless pursuit to stop her daughter from making
the same mistakes. As she tries to stay on track for success,
destiny is doing everything possible to change her life’s
course.
Siva Davis appears like any typical 17 year old struggling
to figure out life, love and more importantly the opposite
sex. Yet she's anything but. The constant high-school drama
that surrounds her disguises an ominous secret that stands to
ruin her life. She’s pregnant and afraid to uncover who is
really her baby’s daddy. Is it the love of her life or a
one-night stand?
When desire ignites and passion overwhelms What’s Done in
Darkness creates the ultimate catalyst that will either break
or strengthen the bond between the two.
Urban Reviews: Where did the
inspiration for this novel come from?
Shaun L. Green: I think there is
something to be said for the cliché quote of: "Write what you
know." I found inspiration for this novel from many different
experiences and situations. I write about emotions I have
experienced in my life, things people that I know have
experienced, and even just things I have pondered about in
life. Inspiration for me comes from the what-if scenarios that
you think about late at night, but believe to be an
impossibility. However, what if those things did happen?
That’s the beginning of an interesting tale and that’s
inspiration for me. That all being said, What’s Done in
Darkness (WDID) is a work of fiction.
Urban Reviews: What made you
want to try your hand at writing?
Shaun L. Green: I have been writing since
I was nine years old! Some people don’t believe that, but it
is very true. I still have old notebooks from the early 80’s
that I would sit down and handwrite my stories in. Page after
page of stories that would evolve and go on from
month-to-month like a soap opera. During my middle school
years, I could easily spend an entire afternoon making up
stories for my friends to listen to. I loved it then and still
love it now. Writing for me is truly an escape.
Urban Reviews: As a new
author, what are your literary aspirations?
Shaun L. Green: Currently, I want to
focus on selling this book and continuing to hone my skills
for my next book. I would love to be on the New York Times
Bestseller list or maybe even the Oprah Winfrey show one day.
However, I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. One
small step at a time, doing what I love most. That is my true
desire. If the writing is good, and I’m diligent, the next
steps can be made easily.
Urban Reviews: What has been
the best advice you've gotten so far from another author in
the business?
Shaun L. Green: The best advise I have
received so far is to keep at it. This is not an easy industry
to break into. There is a lot of rejection and many false
starts. You have to keep your head up and your mind focused on
what you’re trying to achieve. If that’s writing your first
book, or even the second, the first thing you have to do is
start writing!! That’s the best advice because it’s so true.
Urban Reviews: What has
been your biggest fear about the release of your novel or the
book industry itself?
Shaun L. Green: My biggest fear about the
release of my novel was having people read my work and
critique it. WDID was my first book baby and it was hard for
me, even in the early stages, to even let my husband read the
first rough draft! It is exposure on many levels, and you
really want people to "get it". For a brief period of time, I
was concerned about the sex scenes, even thought (albeit
briefly) that they should be removed. It took me a moment to
be okay with my voice and my storytelling abilities on paper.
After I was able to get over that hurdle, I came to the
conclusion that everyone simply wont "get it", or like it, and
that’s okay. Once I accepted that and moved past the
nervousness of exposing of my work, I was cool.
Urban Reviews: Do you have
any ideas or planned releases for the future?
Shaun L. Green: I am working on my next
novel now. Still working out the characters and seeing where
they want to take me. Stay tuned!
Urban Reviews: Do you have
any favorite authors or books?
Shaun L. Green: I have a lot of favorite
authors, but I’ll list my current "fave five." I really like
Eric Jerome Dickey, Terry McMillan, Trisha R. Thomas, Carl
Weber, and Kimberly Lawson Roby. That’s just to name a few. I
am currently reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
Urban Reviews: Who has been
your biggest inspiration outside of the book business?
Shaun L. Green: Who is difficult because
there have been so many people who have inspired me. First up,
my mom and my dad. My mother was a great mom and we had, and
still have, a fantastic friendship/relationship. My dad kept a
book in my hand and introduced me to the wonderful world of
literature. I believe he helped me to hone in on my inkling
for writing at a very early age. My husband has also been
instrumental in helping me pursue this dream. His support and
encouragement are immeasurable. An inspiration outside of my
family would be, in a word, Oprah! Love her!
