Urban Reviews: Can you tell
us what My Son's Wife is all about?
Shelia E. Lipsey: My Son's Wife is
about...turmoil and deep, dark family secrets in the family of
Pastor & First Lady Audrey Grahams' family.
Urban Reviews: Where did
you come up with the idea for this novel?
Shelia E. Lipsey: I am always guided by titles.
I maintain a bank of titles and My Son's Wife is on
that list. God gives me the stories to go along with the
titles. When I sit down to write, God guides me and places the
thoughts in my mind, heart and spirit.
Urban Reviews: How did
you go about getting your book deal?
Shelia E. Lipsey: My Son's Wife is my
third novel with Kensington/Urban. My first novel with
Kensington is Into Each Life, which I submitted to the
publisher. I was offered a book deal with Urban a few months
afterward. I have been writing for them since signing a deal
in 2005.
Urban Reviews: Do you
have ideas or plans for any upcoming projects?
Shelia E. Lipsey: Yes. My fourth novel with
Kensington will be released August 2009. It is entitled
Beautiful Ugly. I am also the founder of Living Your
Dreams Now and we will hold our 1st Literary Seminar March 21,
2009 in Memphis, Tennessee. (www.livingyourdreamsnow.net)
I am president of the online bookclub UC His Glory (www.uchisglorybookclub.net),
and editor-in-chief for the new, fantastic magazine
Victorious.
Urban Reviews: What are
your goals as a writer? Do you see yourself staying
within the Christian Fiction genre?
Shelia E. Lipsey: I see myself remaining with
the Christian fiction genre, writing more nonfiction books,
and continuing to provide resources and opportunities for
aspiring writers and poets to Live Their Dreams Now!
Urban Reviews: What do
you like to do outside of writing?
Shelia E. Lipsey: I absolutely love spending
time with my family and grandchildren. I like to watch
documentaries also and read.
Urban Reviews: Do you
have any favorite authors or books?
Shelia E. Lipsey: My all time mentor is J.
California Cooper
Urban Reviews: Is there
anything about the book industry that took you by surprise?
Shelia E. Lipsey: It is fiercely competitive.
So many people are penning books that it is getting more
difficult to choose great books.
Urban Reviews: What
advice do you want to give to aspiring authors?
Shelia E. Lipsey: Aspiring authors should be
sure that writing is what they have been called to do. It
should be a passion for the person. Study the genre you want
to write through reading authors who write in that particular
genre. Join online writing groups and social networks.
Urban Reviews: Any finals
thoughts you want to leave with readers about yourself or your
novel?
Shelia E. Lipsey: I want my readers to know how
grateful and appreciative I am for their support, words of
encouragement and for taking the time to read my work. I look
forward to presenting more works in the very near future,
including Beautiful Ugly in August 2009. I also contributed a
short story in the anthology Bended Knees (Hollygrove
Publishing), which is scheduled for release December 2009. I
