Urban Reviews: Tell us what My Invisible
Husband is all about.
Shelia M. Goss: My Invisible Husband is the tale of one woman's desperate attempt to stop the age-old question posed to all women at some point in their lives: So when are you getting married? To appease her family and friends, 34 year old Nicolette (Nikki) Montana fakes a Las Vegas wedding. How she handles her web of deceit makes for a dramatic and sometimes comical story. Urban Reviews: Where did you get the idea for this humorous, creative storyline? Shelia M. Goss: The idea for My Invisible Husband came to me in a dream. On a subconscious level, the story idea actually developed after hearing people ask me one too many times "So when are you getting married?" Urban Reviews: My Invisible Husband was originally self-published and now you are signed to Urban Soul. Briefly explain your literary journey from a self-published author to a author signed to a major publisher. Shelia M. Goss: I was blessed to have achieved some success as a self-published author; however going with a major publisher was a natural transition for me at this point in my career. I saw a press release that Urban Books was launching a new women's fiction imprint-Urban Soul so I decided to submit a few of my manuscripts and the rest is Urban history (smile). Urban Reviews: You are also a columnist on a website and do freelance writing. Tell us a little more about these ventures. Shelia M. Goss: It's a fun and rewarding job. I get to interview actors, rappers, singers and other entertainers for online and print publications as well as for my entertainment e-zine (eSpire Entertainment News www.e-spire.blogspot.com). One of the highlights of my freelance writing career was when I got to interview Lisa Marie Presley a day before Oprah talked to her (smile). Urban Reviews: Give us a sneak peak at your next novel and when can we expect that to drop. Shelia M. Goss: Roses Are Thorns, Violets Are True will be out in February 2007. It's about twin sisters named Rose and Violet Purdue. Rose's ultimate goal is to remain in the spotlight, preferable on the silver screen. To her fans, Rose is sincere, glamorous, and charitable; but to her twin Violet, she's a conniving, manipulative person that starves for constant attention. Violet has always been able to forgive her sister's malicious deeds. Well, that is until Rose does the unthinkable. Can these sisters ever be friends, or will they always stand divided? You'll have to read the book to find out (smile). A chapter excerpt is on my website (www.sheliagoss.com). Urban Reviews: Have you faced any challenges as a fairly new author? Shelia M. Goss: Yes. The hardest part for me is getting the word out to readers that the book exists. Urban Reviews: What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned about the book industry? Shelia M. Goss: The book industry is just like corporate America. Urban Reviews: What advice would you give someone wanting to jump into this business? Shelia M. Goss: Believe in yourself and don't let the rejections discourage you. Develop a thick skin. Urban Reviews: Who are some of your favorite authors? Shelia M. Goss: I have so many, but here are a few: Terry McMillan, Maya Angelou, Brandon Massey, Francis Ray, Carl Weber, Victor McGlothin, Brenda Jackson, Cydney Rax, ReShonda Tate Billingsley, Linda Dominique Grosvenor and the list goes on and on. Urban Reviews: What do you want the world to know most about? Shelia M. Goss: I am a living witness that prayer along with faith and works does change things. |
