Sherrance Henderson
Sherrance Henderson
is an author and entrepreneur who has worked with several
of America’s finest Fortune 500 corporations. With
undergraduate and graduate degrees from Howard and Johns
Hopkins Universities, Sherrance knew she wanted to be a
writer since her young and very humble beginnings as a
child growing up in Brooklyn, New York.
The oldest of two siblings reared by a single parent,
Sherrance inherited her unyielding work ethic and keen
grasp of the English language from her mother, a tenured
educator. These traits, acquired at such a young age,
would later give birth to an author and her debut novel,
Sunshine Has Rain.
Sherrance’s leap into the literary arena would later cause
her to be dubbed as the “Queen Bee of Fiction” by her
closest friends and associates.
In Sunshine Has Rain,
Sherrance describes in painstaking and personal detail,
her journey from riches to rags to riches again, through
fictional character, Channa Renee Jones, a woman, who
becomes a paraplegic from a series of unthinkable events
within a six-month period. Based on true events that
transpired in her life, Sherrance reflects on the
experiences of paralysis. Clinically an incomplete
paraplegic, Sherrance’s ability to walk is nothing short
of miraculous. Her physician Dr. Broderick Franklin
agrees, “Sherrance’s condition is truly unique. This kind
of recovery from a serious spinal cord injury doesn’t
occur often.”
Having taken up residence in New York City’s neighboring
state of New Jersey, Sherrance, an independent Small
Business Consultant, released her follow-up novel
The Ten Year Date
in May 2007. When she isn’t writing, Sherrance spends the
majority of her spare time as a pro-active member of the
NAACP, The Urban League, Big Sister of America, and The NY
Coalition of 100 Black Women.

Urban Reviews: Tell us
about The Ten Year Date.
Sherrance Henderson:
In The Ten Year Date,
protagonist Channa Renée Jones is back with a brand new set
of challenges that will test her faith in ways she never
imagined. We were first introduced to Ms. Jones in my debut
novel Sunshine Has Rain. We remember Channa as the
self-absorbed diva who took readers on an emotional roller
coaster ride as we watched her seemingly perfect world come
crashing down all around her, following a series of tragic
events.
In The Ten Year Date, it appears all is well in
Channa’s world once again, that is until she misinterprets
and manipulates her relationship with the handsome and
mysterious Mr. Kevin Dean Walker; the tall, sexy hunk of
burning love she has been dating without a commitment for
nearly a decade. The real Mr. Walker finally makes his
appearance after Channa accidentally discovers his “secret,”
thrusting readers to the edge of their seats as this steamy
page-turner begins to sizzle before the readers’ eyes.
This titillating read of dead-end relationships and lying
lovers is being hailed as the “relationship bible” for women
everywhere. It’s also the subject of talk radio and book
clubs around the country. This novel appeals to people from
all walks of life, because its message of safe sex and the
need for honest and loving relationships is universal.
Urban Reviews: What
inspired you to create this storyline?
Sherrance Henderson:
Like many women, I have dated men for
far too long. Not as long as ten years, but long enough to
know that the relationship was going nowhere fast. I also
wanted to remind my sistahs to practice safe sex, even with
a familiar sex partner.
Urban Reviews:
Readers will find that you included some very important
issues in The Ten Year Date such as paralysis and HIV. What
prompted you to incorporate these topics into this story?
Sherrance Henderson:
I want readers to know that people,
all people have S-E-X. One does not have to be a "Fly Girl"
to have a full sex life. I have found that a lot of novels
showcase the picture perfect woman who has a full sex life
in addition to the "good" life. Channa Renée Jones walks
with a slight drag in her step. She has bladder issues and
she does not have a job but Channa lives a full life. A life
full with friends, travel, two handsome men and to-die-for
sex. Life is good...at least that is what it seems like.
The biggest lesson that Channa learns is to practice safe
sex. She, like many women, believe that if they have known
the man for years, they don't have to make him use a condom.
This is not true and should never be practiced. Channa just
had to learn this lesson the hard way. Maybe my readers will
learn this lesson by just reading The Ten Year Date.
At least this is what I hope.
Urban Reviews: Is
there a message that you want readers to grasp?
Sherrance Henderson:
"A man will tell you about himself
without his permission." - Sherrance Henderson.
This is a direct quote from my heart, mind and soul. Women
need to watch more and think deeply about what a man says
and does.
Urban Reviews: When
can we expect Girlfriends, How Many of Us Have Them to be
released ? Can you give us a sneak peak of it?
Sherrance Henderson:
Sunshine Has Rain and The
Ten Year Date are part of a trilogy. Girlfriends, How
Many of Us Have Them marks the last installment of the
tales of Channa Renée Jones.
Readers who have read Sunshine Has Rain will know
there are missing answers to questions like... Why did
Channa's so called close girlfriends betray her in her time
of need? Why did Marie in The Ten Year Date tell
Channa that she had a spell placed on her (Maybe this is
something that one of her girlfriends did, but why?), and
will Channa really confront her mother for allowing her
brother Kyle to behave the way he behaves?
I am seven months pregnant with my first child, and since I
type laying on my tummy, I have to wait to start writing
Channa's last tale.
Urban Reviews: Can
you tell us how you started your literary career?
Sherrance Henderson:
I have always been a writer, just not
a paid author. I decided in 2004 that I had stories to tell
that I believed other readers would enjoy reading. I always
wanted to be in control of my own destiny so I chose to
publish my novels under my own publishing company. I also
publish other authors as well. After Girlfriends, How
Many of US Have Them, I will retire my pen and just
focus on developing other authors.
Urban Reviews: What
have you learned about the book industry so far?
Sherrance Henderson:
- Payola is not solely restricted to the music industry!
- Placement on the Top seller's list of Essence is often
just at the request of the big publishing houses.
- There is a lot of "Hate" among authors. It is really cut
throat.
- If you don't have money to lay the game of self-publishing
or running a small publishing house the big wigs will
destroy your quest for success. Publishing is still a
business.
- One has to be creative to sell books. Just think about it,
all books basically have the same packaging. Authors have to
think out of the box to grab the readers' attention.
Urban Reviews: What
do you want people to know most about you?
Sherrance Henderson:
I want people to know that I love what
I do and as long as I have a great story to tell, I will
make sure that I share it with my readers.
