Urban Reviews:  Tell us about your book Duplicity.
Shila Amos-Efe:
Duplicity is about a naïve young woman Sylvia, a British citizen by birth who falls in love with Patrick an immigrant who does a good job at concealing his status until the relationship builds up. Sylvia falls head over heels in love with Patrick when she discovers that he is a care worker, working with vulnerable people. Impressed by his sensitivity, they become inseparable. The fact that he is her first love meant that she knew absolutely nothing about men and gave him her all. Is this real? They get married after a few months and Patrick eventually gets his citizenship. Shock!! Horror!! The relationship suddenly takes a different turn. It is not just the two of them in the marriage, Madam Lucy, the mother-in-law runs the home!

Patrick is the typical mummy's boy who cannot do anything without involving his mum. And then there is a different and yet disturbing part of Patrick's character. He becomes very abusive towards Sylvia who is now torn and betrayed by the fact that the man she fell in love and married is an entirely different person. It does not get any easier as she bear him children. Torn by the fact that her culture forbids divorce, the fact that she is absolutely petrified of being a single patent, she stays on. How long would this go on for? How much would she put up with? She also discovers some disturbing truth about her marriage. Patrick is a sex addict and leads a double life. It is a story of ultimate betrayal of trust and loyalty and takes a sickening turn. How far Patrick would go to acquire wealth?

Urban Reviews:  What drove you to come up with the topics discussed in Duplicity?
Shila Amos-Efe:
I came up with the topics discussed in duplicity because of the alarming rates of deception in marriage between citizens and immigrants. The fact that people would go to any length just to have a legal immigration status, including having children with partners they do not love. These sorts of relationships have left many children growing up in a single parent home. The topic raised in this book would enable people to search for those signs and detect a cheat before allowing themselves fall victims of such predators.

Urban Reviews:  Can we expect more of the same in your writing or do you plan to write different genres of books in the future?
You could expect more of the same in my writing, but I do intend to write different genres of books in future.

Urban Reviews:  Do you have any more projects lined up for the future?
Shila Amos-Efe:
I am now working with victim support, helping victims of abuse. I am also working on two other books, one which looks like the continuation of duplicity because of the way it ended, and the other an entirely different genres.

Urban Reviews:  What made you want to become an author?
Shila Amos-Efe:
Passion for writing, I have always been better at expressing myself in writing than in speech so I find this side of me quite fulfilling.

Urban Reviews:  Was there any one thing or person that inspired you to want to write?
Shila Amos-Efe:
I had always wanted to reach out to people. My passion for writing was drawn from my experience being a victim of domestic violence had made me understand how easy it is for one to loose one's voice and disappear into the surface. When you are locked away by the circumstance in life, it takes you to different dimensions. I reached my breaking point and made a choice to live again so writing is my second chance of living; a promise to fulfill my destiny and give women and men like me a voice and something to relate to. I had always admired the works of great women like Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelo. They make me realize that being black should not be an excuse of not achieving one's goal.

Urban Reviews:  What challenges have you faced with being an author?
Shila Amos-Efe:
Juggling running a family as a single parent with normal office hours and then finding time to write my manuscripts and then the tedious research into finding the right audience for my genre in the writing industry.

Urban Reviews:  What are some of your favorite authors or books?
Shila Amos-Efe:
My favorite authors are Maya Angelo and Virginia Andrew.

Urban Reviews:  What do you want the world to know most about you?
Shila Amos-Efe:
I am a woman with great passion for life who likes to see people treated fairly and with the respect due them.
