Tammy Merkison

A native Floridian, Tammy Merkison's love for writing began as a child writing creative stories for school projects. Her ability at painting vivid pictures for the reader’s imagination made her assignments highly sought after by peer selection for reading aloud. Leaving creative writing behind, Tammy began professionally writing in the aviation maintenance industry writing specs for training of skilled professionals. Never far from her heart was always that desire for crafting words from her imagination.

In 2004, through much prayer, Tammy decided to live her life’s passion and re-enter the world of creative writing, placing one stipulation on herself, to write realistic fiction with a positive message. “My goal is to capture realism by illustrating life’s choices and the subsequent consequences of those choices made.”

Miami Reign is Tammy’s debut novel and the first in a series of realistic fictitious books. She poses the question to readers, “What would you do for love, how about unconditional love”?

A local model and actress, Tammy has appeared in numerous hair and fashion shows in and around the Central Florida area in addition to television and radio commercials. She divides her time between Florida and Georgia.

Urban Reviews: Tell us about Miami Reign.
Tammy Merkison: Miami Reign is a story about choices and consequences. The main character, James “Blue” Jackson is not your stereotypical drug dealer. He is an attorney, a man sworn to uphold the law and support the Constitution of the United States, yet he finds himself through life’s choices at a cross road and has to make some pretty tough decisions.

Urban Reviews: How did you come up with the idea for Miami Reign?
Tammy Merkison:
This idea came about through conversations I had with a girlfriend from Miami. She basically came of age during this time period. The stark contrasts from the Miami of today versus the Miami of the mid-eighties fascinated me. Conversations with her and other friends and family members in law enforcement helped me to create a realistic character that dominated Miami’s underworld.

Urban Reviews: You self-published Miami Reign under your own company I Believe Entertainment. Why'd you decide to do this?
Tammy Merkison:
I self published under my own company because I felt like main stream publishing houses would not understand my voice or my audience. As a newcomer in the industry, I needed to prove that there was an audience for the type of stories I write, hence my company motto “Realistic Fiction with a Positive Message”. What I mean by that is I do my best to create work that portray conscience, favorable imagery.

Urban Reviews: What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of self-publishing?
Tammy Merkison: Some of the strengths of self publishing are having total artistic control, not being forced to change characters or the direction with which you are traveling creatively. Another strength is gaining first hand knowledge of the industry. Self publishing gives you knowledge that ultimately helps you understand the business overall. Understanding the business makes your literary life a lot easier. Weaknesses on the other hand are not having resources readily available to make moves in this industry.

Urban Reviews: You've also done some acting and modeling. How did you make the transition into writing your first novel?
Tammy Merkison:
The transition was natural to me as I had worked in front of the camera and on the stage for years. I was able to take some of those experiences gained and shift them to pen and paper.

Urban Reviews: When can we expect a sequel to Miami Reign?
Tammy Merkison:
I am currently at work now on the sequel. It seems that folks just can’t seem to get enough of Blue and many have unanswered questions. Prayerfully, Miami’s Next Reign will be released by the summer of next year.

Urban Reviews: What challenges have you faced in the industry so far?
Tammy Merkison:
Challenges I have faced would be the trials of learning the business. As an author, a lot of time is spent creating the work. As a self-published author, a lot of time is spent running your business. So quite naturally, time management is big challenge.

Urban Reviews: Have you gotten any sound advice from fellow authors?
Tammy Merkison:
Yes, Author Kenny Blue, The Beach House said “Just keep doing what you love and you’ll be happy”. Guess what, he is right! I’ve never been happier in my life.

Urban Reviews: Would you want to be under a major publishing house in the future?
Tammy Merkison:
If the right opportunity presents itself, I would definitely be open to discussing the possibilities.

Urban Reviews: What is the one thing the world doesn't know about Tammy Merkison - the person?
Tammy Merkison:
That I am a fun person. I live life to the fullest and encourage all around me to do the same!
