Urban Reviews: Tell our readers about PK's Betrayal.
Terrence T. Ellery: The title says a lot. P.K.'s Betrayal is a story about being
betrayed. It’s during a moment in one man’s life where everyone
closest to him seems to be against him; whether it’s for sex, money,
or for selfish gain.
Urban Reviews: Where did the idea for this novel come from?
Terrence T. Ellery: Well, it’s funny it started out as a two-page homework assignment
in a fiction writing class while attending Columbia College of
Chicago. The feedback and involvement from the classmates forced me
to continue the story.
Urban Reviews: What are your goals as a writer? Have you considered the idea
of being signed to a major book industry?
Terrence T. Ellery: Being a man that walks in faith & live with a purpose, I feel
there is a bigger vision behind this book. I want to write part two
to this novel as well as open my own publishing company. I have
dreamed, fantasized and visualized being signed by a major publisher
putting me in a position to share my gift of writing with people
across the country.
Urban Reviews: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
Terrence T. Ellery: I believe it was my sophomore year of high school that I realized
a lot of people enjoyed my writing. A began to write & recite poetry
at various venues. This led to writing lyrics, skits, and then stage
plays.
Urban Reviews: What advice do you have for others thinking about getting
into the business?
Terrence T. Ellery: Do it for the love of writing. You have to have a passion for the
art. If you jump out the door looking to make a dollar, you may be
disappointed. Find someone who believes in you as well. This will
make your journey that much easier.
Urban Reviews: Do you feel it was more difficult to break into the business or
to actually promote and sell your book?
Terrence T. Ellery: Well, I feel
the breaking into the business was a harder part. Different
publishers and critics will give you different feedback which can
lead to you questioning your own ability. I think the promoting came
easier to me due to my minor marketing background, personality, as
well as a great supporting cast of family, friends, fans and
believers.
Urban Reviews: Are you working on an upcoming project and when can do you
think it will be released?
Terrence T. Ellery: I am currently working on the sequel to P.K.’s Betrayal which I hope
to release before the spring/summer of 2009.
Urban Reviews: Do you have any favorite authors or books that you enjoy
reading?
Terrence T. Ellery: I am a big fan of John Grisham. I also enjoyed the Donald Goines
classics. I really enjoyed reading The Coldest Winter Ever by
Sister Souljah as well as Nigger by Dick Gregory.
Urban Reviews:
What do you like to do outside of writing?
Terrence T. Ellery: I love doing things with the kids, community work, church activities
as well as play basketball. I love being in a position to teach.
It’s like when I talk, people listen, so I always watch what I say.
Urban Reviews: What else would you like to share with us about yourself
or your debut novel?
Terrence T. Ellery: As a Christian,
I faced challenges when writing this book. It could have been
released in 2007 but I had to get God’s okay and wait until
my skin was thick enough to take the heat that came with it. God has
blessed me with an amazing gift to entertain people. When you read
my writing I want to paint a picture, and have you walk away feeling
closer to my characters.
