T. Styles
With
a goal to become one of the world’s largest African American
publishers, T.Styles, Essence Magazine’s best selling author
of Black & Ugly and A Hustler’s Son, has
launched her own company, The Cartel Publications. Born in
Southeast Washington, D.C, and raised in Houston, Texas, she
now resides in Baltimore County, Maryland with her son.
She credits her creativity to God, the hundreds of DVDs she
has in her collection and trailblazers such as Sister
Souljah, saying that, “In order to be blessed, you have to
pay homage to those who’ve paved the way.” Although writing
is her love, she is certainly multi-talented. Having worked
as a Certified Massage Therapist, Model and Public Speaker
for major companies/organizations such as The Office of the
US Supreme Court, Marriot, Carefirst Blue Cross and Blue
Shield and Eduserc, she has discovered that her true passion
is writing and publishing.
In addition to working with companies and individuals
regarding Health and Wellness issues, T spends her time
speaking honestly about the issues she’s experienced with
the law as a juvenile. She is no stranger to the
complexities and issues of the street.
“I represent the hustler’s, pimps, the prostitutes, the
abused wives, the crack heads, the unappreciated, the broke,
the busted, the liars, the cheats, the single moms, the
single dads, the homeless and every unimaginable thing you
hate or choose to hide from. And until I see a change in a
positive direction, my novels will continue to reflect a
light on America’s secrets. I am STREET LIT!”
With an excellent support system, including her son and
business partner Charisse Washington, Vice President of her
company, they plan to blaze the charts with their first
releases: Shyt List by Reign and Pitbulls In A
Skirt by Mikal Malone.

Urban Reviews: Start by
telling our readers about your story in Diamond Playgirls.
T. Styles: Diamond Playgirls came about from
Karen Miller. She came up with the concept and the idea. We
individually thought of our storylines and characters.
Urban Reviews: Where did you come up with the idea
for this particular story?
T. Styles: The story came from brainstorming. It
was different for me since I mainly write hip-hop/street lit.
Still...I gave it a try and Mona Lisa Dupree was formed. She's
me in a lot of ways and in others we're different. I'm nowhere
near as loose as Mona is with her sexuality.
Urban Reviews: You also have a recent novel called
Black and Ugly. Can you tell us more about this?
T. Styles: Black and Ugly is the love of my
life. This story is about a sister who has some issues
regarding her complexion. She's actually very beautiful but
doesn't realize it. And because her best friend and mother
continue to make her feel like something's wrong with her
beautiful tone, it only adds to her burdens.
Urban Reviews: Can you share with our readers your
literary journey from your debut novel up until this point?
T. Styles: I started with a self published
novel. The novel actually dropped in June. While doing
signings, I noticed that Triple Crown gained a lot of props so
I submitted a synopsis of a book I was going to write not
expecting to get a hit. They responded back and I wrote A
Hustler's Son along with Black and Ugly in two
weeks. I was signed in October of that same year. After that I
continued to write with TCP, putting out a short story under
them called Street Love. Than I moved with a major for
Diamond Playgirls. Not being able to wait for the next
thing, The Cartel Publications was formed.
Urban Reviews: You recently started your own
publishing company Cartel Publications. Can you tell us more
about this venture?
T. Styles: It's a new age street lit company. I
think people are going to love what we bring. We're more
interactive with our readers and we believe in getting them
involved. I realize this is business, but I also think we
should have fun with it too!! We're ENTERTAINERS!!!! That's
what the Cartel is about. Family, money and entertainment.
Urban Reviews: What made you decide to start your
own publishing company?
T. Styles: I wanted more control over my career.
I know I'm a hard worker and I decided to benefit off of
myself. My business partner Charisse encouraged it and the
rest is history. Our history. We've been receiving a lot of
praise for how we came out and our first novel Shyt List
is doing well. Check
www.thecartelpublications.com for updates.
Urban Reviews: As a publisher, what types of
things are you looking for before deciding to sign an author?
T. Styles: I'm looking for hustlers with hard
storylines. I don't want authors who will have a problem with
getting on the curb and moving their books with me. Working
hard and pushing your book no matter what is a testament to
how bad you really want your career.
Urban Reviews: What advice would you give aspiring
authors?
T. Styles: Don't focus on the book deal, focus
on the work. The rest will follow.
Urban Reviews: Is there anything that you know now
that you wish you would have known at the beginning of your
career?
T. Styles: I LOVE every LAST one
of my lessons. I needed them. Everything worked in the perfect
order and put me at the exact point in my life where I can
truly say I'm doing what I love!!! The bad lessons and the
good ones have molded me into the business woman I am today.
Urban Reviews: Are you working on any other
upcoming projects?
T. Styles: Yes!!! Outside of dropping
Pitbulls In A Skirt by Mikal Malone, Victoria's Secret
by Jason Poole, and Poison by K.D. Harris, I'm working
on Black And Ugly As Ever and A Hustler's Son 2,
both of which will drop under The Cartel.
Urban Reviews: Name one thing that the world does
not know about T. Styles-the person?
T. Styles: That I believe wholeheartedly that
ANYTHING you want in this world you can have. ANYTHING. I
believe most of us don't use our will power because we can't
see beyond what's around us. That's why I adore the book, The
Secret. It reaffirmed everything I've always known. Dream and
take what's yours!! That's my motto.
